I had so much fun making this quilt and it went together so fast. This is a great beginners pattern, just leave off the appliqué. You can make this in time for Spring from your favorite packet of layer cakes, by adding an accent color and a little bit of pop with the appliqué flower. The ribbons of color add happy motion to the quilt, breaking up that block look while still keeping it simple. This pattern allows you to incorporate your favorite color into the quilt to make it unique. Lone Star Baby Quilt Tutorial, Part II. Today we’re going to finish the baby quilt we started in Part 1 by stitching the three layers together—the actual quilting part of the process —and finishing the edge—or binding the quilt.
Make sure quilt top is well pressed and flat. Fabric requirements: Batting 41″ x 41″ Backing 1 ¼ yard Binding 3/8 yard—cut into 4 strips 2 ½″ x 42″ Let’s talk about batting. There are lots of batting options—you can read more details in this batting post, but to sum up, since I’m going to machine quilt this myself, I like to use a low-loft cotton or cotton/poly blend batting. Center the pieced quilt top on batting and backing fabric with the right sides facing away from the batting. After I’ve put the three layers together, I like to take all three layers to the ironing board and iron them all together. Before we can quilt the layers together, we need to baste the quilt.

You can use layer cakes or charm squares for this project. I used a Layer Cake, hence the name! 1 layer cake OR 4 charm packs Honey Honey by Kate Spain 1 layer cake OR 4 charm packs Bella Solids in Snow (background fabric**)5/8 yard binding fabric 4 yards backing fabric (Honey Honey in Sunset) **If you prefer to use yardage for your background fabric, you will need 2 3/4 yards. one.Open layer cake and choose 36 of the 42 prints you would like for the blocks, set the other 6 aside. two.Cut each layer cake into 5" squares. You should have 144 5" squares. three. From your background fabric, cut 20 5" strips x width of fabric. Five.Pair remaining 96 solid and pattern fabrics, making half square triangles.

I am so excited to be sharing another Bake Shop Quilt with you all! It’s me, Corey, from Little Miss Shabby. As soon as I saw Bonnie and Camille’s Ruby line of fabric, I knew that some of it had to make its way to my house. Not only is the fabric beautiful– it also shares its name with my husband’s Great Aunt Ruby. Incidentally, my husband’s Grandmother’s name was Opal, sister to his Great Aunt Ruby.
