Eco sustainable. Floating-Permaculture. Audi Urban Future Initiative. Alan Boutwell. Alan Boutwell became acquainted with the ideas of the megastructuralists during his studies and was particularly impressed by the thoughts and designs of Archigram.

Alan Boutwell

In 1965, his first designs of modular building systems were released, in which he experimented with new technologies and materials. The project of a gigantic linear city that he created together with Michael Mitchell caused a sensation. It spanned on hundred meter high pillars straight across the American continent. Its interior combined all classical functions of urban life and was connected by a complex traffic system that was differentiated by speed, transportation and distances. Alan Boutwell/ Mike Mitchell, Continuous city for 1.000.000 human beings. In: Domus 470, Milan, 1969 Alan Boutwell and Michael Mitchell described their project with the self-confidence and urgency that is characteristic of that time: This is our city. LAGI-2012

July 2011. Architecture theory and practice has changed dramatically with the use of computers.

July 2011

A lot has changed or has been adapted, but for many a radical new orientation lies still ahead. There are some fundamental shifts in the way a process oriented thinking of architecture manages the different steps from analysis to design to construction and beyond. The way it can integrate and mange thousands of parameters using algorithms and using it to dynamically model the progress is challenging a profession still largely clinging on to a modernist objectivity and distance.

Kas Oosterhuis is appointed professor digital design methods at the Delft Technical University and leads Hyperbody, the knowledge center for Nonstandard and Interactive Architecture at the TU Delft. His recent book 'Towards a New Kind of Building is published by NAi Publishers (2011) and was discussed earlier on urbanTick. Untitled. BIArch Dialogues. Reviewing Architectural Knowledge Formats. The Barcelona Institute of Architecture present its forthcoming BIArch Dialogues “Reviewing Architectural Knowledge Formats” to which I am invited.

BIArch Dialogues. Reviewing Architectural Knowledge Formats

As the title suggests, the dialogues will focus on issues regarding the generation and dissemination of architectural knowledge and content, through print and digital media, institutions and curatorial practices, and the establishment of pedagogical agendas. This way, BIArch hopes to open a field of inquiry that complements the Institute’s fundamental theoretical, technical and academic concerns. Through the shared reflection of scholars, critics, independent publishers, digital media entrepreneurs, curators, and cultural activists, the dialogues hope to establish a framework that might provide some of the answers to a context in which knowledge is permanently evolving.
