ENGLISH. In this video Stephen Owens (Swire Properties Inc), Bernardo Fort-Brescia (Arquitectonica) and Hugh Dutton (Hugh Dutton Associates) tell the story of the design of the Brickell City Centre in Miami and especially the vision behind the Climate Ribbon®, an architectural feature combining precision engineering and environmental design with an elegant sculptural form. IMAGE ABOVE: average sun vectors reaching shops If you have been recently following our activities on facebook or twitter, you may have heard about our design for the Climate Ribbon® in Miami, a project we develop for Swire Properties Ltd., with the main architects Arquitectonica and wind specialists RWDI.

The vision behind the project is now becoming reality and it’s a pleasure to share the details of the design process via this blog. Sebastian Perrault of Hugh Dutton Associates will be one of the tutor of the 4th Parametric Design workshop taking place in Leipzig from 5th to 9th December 2013. RhinoVAULT is a plug-in for Rhino, being developed at the BLOCK Research Group by Matthias Rippmann, myself and Philippe Block, that allows for the intuitive design of compression-only shapes, offering a maximum control of the geometry. This software is written particularly for shaping unreinforced masonry vaults, but can also be used for designing efficient freeform shells.

Based on the Thrust Network Approach (TNA), which uses a force network as discretization of the shape, it is possible to internally redistribute forces within the network using force diagrams. A first application of the tool is a prototype of a freeform Catalan thin-tile vault erected at the ETH Campus, Zurich, Switzerland. It was planned and build by Lara Davis, and designed by Matthias Rippmann. Pictures (c) by BLOCK Research Group. Parametric Array. | Ali Torabi.

MSc2 studio – 1:1 prototypes Whole studio project was initialized by Hyperbody research group at the Faculty of Architecture in TU Delft University . Jelle Feringa was leading the course and provided us with all needed infrastructure. Special thanks should also be given to guys from ROK office – Matthias Rippmann and Silvan Oesterle, they were kind enough to come to Delft and teach us how to make the best use of Rhino-Vault plugin , which they themselves develop. Chris Kievid was also very helpful in the assembly of the pavilion.

Drawings of the pavillion. Www.muhammadhafiz.com - Download project description Designatum is an interactive installation, using input from users to build random spatial networks out of its web-like internal structure.

As a user enters a sentence (via the attached keyboard), a microcontroller processes their given information: breaking the sentence into its individual words. It then scatters the words within itself, creating a new and random pattern of electro-luminescent wires, connecting the LCDs displaying the words of their original sentence — the original context is discarded as obsolete. When idle, Designatum cycles automatically between a random flickering and a directed traversal of the electro-luminscent wires — creating a visual interest that attracts the users’ attention. The linear narrative created by the user is deconstructed, it’s initial meaning and context withdrawn. Designatum shows us that meaning can exist in the arbitrary connections between our symbols, independent from their contextual arrangement.

Skin. Untitled.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Brick Tectonics by Ricardo Ploemen. Technische Universiteit Eindhoven student Ricardo Ploemen has designed a conceptual chapel with wavy brick walls, using an AutoCad script to determine the structure of each facade. Called Brick Tectonics, the project involved generating different structural patterns according to changing parametres, creating curved or pleated walls. Ploemen combined the resulting forms to design a space where a building with a pitched roof and pleated walls would enclose two curved surfaces for visitors to pass between.

See also: Pike Loop by Gramazio & Kohler (September 2009) The following is from Ricardo Ploemen: With the aid of a self-written script in AutoCad 2008 research has been done on the tectonics of brick facades. The script generates simultaneously a mutual shift of the different bricks and layers on the basis of several, by the user determined, parameters. The specific shift of the different layers determines the structure of the brick façade and can be regulated by the designer. Parametric design | >> ParaMaterial. Seminar + Workshop “Design through Systems Thinking Informed by Materials” . 01 I gave a seminar and run a workshop* titled “Design through Systems Thinking Informed by Materials” at the Istanbul Technical University, Graduate School of Architecture as a part of the course Computer Application in Architecture.

The proposed approach aims to create a method based on systems thinking by referencing nature in order to generate a fundamental base of computational design. Students should explore design through material systems in a holistic manner. By integrating systems thinking to the design process, in which the rules and relationship among system elements are defined at the beginning of the design process, most efficient solutions are generated by the system itself.

Students are asked to test this method on a façade solution. Image Credit: Gabriele Macri (Ootheca of trunculariopsis trunculus) *Special thanks to Ass.Prof. Form Active Structures. 03 Form Active Structures. 02. Clipboard07. Jhon lennon.
