It doesn’t help you to focus on bad thoughts. Instead, stay focused on your job search. Staying focused does include reaching out to your contact person(s) at the company once every two weeks to graciously restate your interest in the job. Call the hiring manager, if you have met that person, and the HR rep on the search. Both people have tasks to complete in getting to an offer. It’s good for both of them to visit the status of their search every two weeks.
If you connect with administrative assistants rather than your targets, don’t be upset. In making your contacts, you will be showing that you can do follow-up and you will be building relationships. My broad experience in [Hiring Company’s Industry] management would be a strong addition to the management team currently in place. I am not shy about sharing my ideas or thoughts, but do so in a tactful and diplomatic manner. I was on the phone with a resume client a while ago. She’s a financial executive, a Controller. We were talking about her accomplishments. Specifically, we were talking about a general ledger system conversion that she did. PeopleSoft. Four months start to finish. “I can’t claim credit for this,” she said. I responded by saying, “Please talk about the conversion in just this way in your interview. The takeaway? Tell If Your Interview Went Well. Do this: When the employer reaches out to schedule your interview, ask, “How long should I expect to be there?” This is a reasonable question. You need to know how to plan your schedule. Then go to your interview. When you leave, check your watch, or phone, or clock — whichever.
On the other hand, if you were there longer than anticipated, your interview probably went well. They don’t want to get their hands dirty any more. They’re beyond that. They’ve earned the right to be a boss. Thus, I loved this graphic my cousin posted on Facebook the other day: It’s such a great illustration of a common interview failure point. Are you the boss behind the desk or the leader at the front of the team? BTW, this is also a pretty good thing to figure out about the person you’ll be reporting to before you accept a job offer. Ace “What Do You Know About Our Company?” The question also gives me insight into whether or not the candidate is a curious person. I value curiosity because it’s a critical element of both learning and adaptability. Since change is the not-so-new normal, the abilities to learn and adapt are almost always critically important in the positions I fill. Now, here’s the kicker. Hardly anyone can answer the question.
Not even people interviewing for six-figure jobs. Most candidates don’t prepare for interviews by learning about the company. I always want to ask, “So, you want to work for a company you know nothing about?” All these slackers less prepared candidates give you the opportunity to establish yourself as a proactive, go-getter by simply learning a little about the company before your interview. Misconceptions Do you think you might have left the interviewer with any misconceptions about you?
If so, ask and clarify. This might sound like, “When we were discussing such and such, I’m concerned that I might have left you with the impression that…” Missed Qualifications Did the interviewer miss asking you about a desired qualification you know you have? Interviewer Concerns Ask the interviewer if they have any concerns about your qualifications or fit. Ask for the Job Tell the interviewer you want the job and give a succinct explanation of what’s in it for them/their company to hire you. In sales, this is called “asking for the order.” Process Check If the interviewer hasn’t scheduled your next interview, ask them where they are in the process, how many candidates they’re talking with, and what their timeline is.
