TwiBack – New Twitter Application to Use Multiple Backgrounds an. What do you pay attention to when you visit a profile of some new Twitter follower? I am quite sure you do notice the Twitter background and this is what sends you a certain message in addition to that in the bio and the latest updates. I myself have a few observations regarding what a background may mean on Twitter. For example, a default background or one of the standard themes is often an indication of a spammer or yet another faceless account that will try to sell me something. A background that contains a very happy smiling photo of the user along with all the contact details usually demonstrates an independent marketing or consulting professional who relies on Twitter heavily to drive sales – hence the aggressive background.

I myself have chosen quite a neutral photo of some flowers on the keyboard of my laptop – simply because I liked the photo and it combined the two things that I like: technology and nature. The Next Great Social Network? Your Address Book - The Steve Ru. Innovation ROI – Why Every Enterprise 2.0-Enabled Conn. October 27, 2009 by Hutch Carpenter In a recent post on the Spigit blog, Study – Collaborative Networks Produce Better Ideas, I described the research of Professor Ronald Burt. He found that employees who are better connected across the organization generate higher quality ideas than those with limited connections. Wider access to the ideas, knowledge, experiences and judgment of colleagues makes employees stronger in innovation. I posted this write-up in the Continuous Innovation group on LinkedIn.

Need to keep in mind that collaborative networks have little to do with technology. There’s a good alternative perspective. I see it differently though. But not everyone need be an uber connector to see benefits from plugging into a more connected network. The graph below is my concept for how this effect manifests: Assume a population of employees: 25 in this hypothetical example.

The gray zone between the red and blue lines represent that improvement. Next…the ROI math. Like this: Case study: A success story in bilingual social media - iMediaCo. Serving customers in multiple languages has long been the practice in Canada, where both English and French are the official languages. Thus, at MTS Allstream, fully bilingual websites have been the norm since the mid 1990s.

This includes the company's external-facing website as well as its intranet. As one of Canada's leading national communication solutions companies, MTS Allstream is constantly looking to forge a closer link between the company and its customers -- and eventually inject customer perspectives very early in the product development lifestyle. Additionally, following the 2004 merger between MTS and Allstream, the company has looked to open up information sharing and break down departmental silos.

To accomplish these goals, MTS Allstream established a presence on a number of external social media sites, as well as built new internal mechanisms to increase collaboration across the company. Next page >> Why Brands Should Consider a Facebook App - ClickZ. Gary Stein | October 27, 2009 | 3 Comments inShare0 Follow the FarmVille example. Guitar Hero, the video game where you unleash your inner rock-legend, totally changed the video game market. When the game was first released, it captured a 91 Score (out of 100) on the very influential Metacritic site.

It changed how people thought about "gaming," not to mention "gamers. " The game was featured on television shows and in magazines. FarmVille is a video game, released by a company called Zynga. Currently, FarmVille has over 60 million daily, active users. Clearly, there's something going on here.

The Opportunity for Facebook Apps While there are several apps developed for the iPhone by brands, there aren't nearly as many for the Facebook platform. When Facebook first opened up its platform to developers, a bunch of big brands dove in, launching lots of applications with lots of functionality. But that was another time and another Facebook. Did the Web Kill Gourmet Magazine? The murder happened in the kitchen with a laptop. That possible explanation for the death of Gourmet magazine sounds like a solution from the game Clue. The 68-year-old food magazine met its end this month when publisher Condé Nast cut it and two other magazines.

Some blamed Gourmet’s demise on the Internet and its theft of the print audience. It’s easy to see why. For foodies, the attraction of thousands of food websites is powerful. But the threat to food titles goes beyond the mere existence of the web; it also comes from magazines’ challenges in the changing game of branding.

Getting to Know You It might be tempting for some to blame the thousands of food bloggers for distracting audiences from print media. There’s a food blogger for every ethnic specialty, dietary concern or locality. Gourmet’s food coverage was also aspirational in nature, making it somewhat inaccessible for many people. Teens Adopting Twitter | Brian Solis - PR 2.0. InShare0 Source: Shutterstock As recently as August 2009, blogs and media outlets reported that teens are just not taking to the Twitterverse, instead opting for text messaging, social networks such as Facebook and Myspace, and other communications tools such as IM. The reasons for not using Twitter ranged from privacy concerns to the devices they used to communicate. Nielsen published a report that surveyed over 250,000 US Internet users to confirm everyone’s suspicions. Teens were among the smallest demographic using Twitter In October 2009, I published demographic data defining all popular social networks, including Twitter, that only confirmed this finding. According to comScore: Why you are cleverer than you think - Times Online. How to Add Search Shortcuts to Google Chrome. Last week Danny Sullivan twittered he was looking for a creative commons image to use. Christine Churchill poked a little fun at me wondering how I was able to get that so quickly. The trick is using search shortcuts, and I’m going to show you how to do it. For my first example I’m going to set up a creative commons search for commercially licensed images on flickr (aka images you allowed to use on websites you make a profit on as long as you attribute them properly). Go the advanced search page on flickr, put in your query term and check the boxes creative commons, and commercial reuse. Execute the search, and you’re result should look something like this: Make sure it says for commercial use so you stay legal. We could disect all of the parameters, but really all we need to identify is the “q=magic+kingdom” part.

Next click the “add” button another dialog box will open You need to enter a unique name (in this case flickr) into the box. Real Time Search Is Just A Foundation, There Will Be Something B. In my morning reading, I found an article at the NY Times that got me thinking, How High Will Real Time Search Fly? It is an interesting article more for the questions it raises than any profound theories. First, the real time web is obviously a hot topic: No one doubts that helping users find fresh, up-to-the-minute content on the Web is valuable. But plenty of other valuable Web services — including content sites, free Web e-mail and social networks — have struggled to find effective business models.

Granted, business models are hard to find in many cases especially if you take advertising out of the equation. If real-time search is ever to achieve the same kind of magic, it needs a large volume of queries and the same ability to match users’ intent with ads. The other problem is that people do not know much about real time search. It is at this point that I hope you can tell that we are missing something in this real time search business. Not Realtime. Startup School: Stone, Williams on how they co-founded Twitter | 5 Reasons Google Wave is Not Ready. I was fortunate enough to receive an invitation into Google Wave shortly after the initial 100,000 invititations went out last month.

Initially, I was a bit overwhelmed and did not really know where to begin or what to do. Bwana was kind enough to engage in a real-time wave with me, and show me around a bit. Afterwards, I began to see the potential. However, I think there are many reasons why Google Wave still is not ready for prime-time. Lack of Access Control Google Wave does not have any sort of access control for managing waves and wave participants: Anyone can be added to a wave by a participant in the wave.Any wave participant can add a bot to the wave (because bots are simply treated as participants). It is not possible to remove participants (except for bots) from a wave.Anyone can modify any part of the wave.

Here is what I think Google Wave needs to implement to resolve the access control issues: Image Credit: Brandon Lowery Poor Contact Management Image Credit: Hannes Grobe. 20 Hilarious Social Media Comic Strips | Penn Olson. The Right Way For Media Companies to Create Social. Swimming in the roiling sea of online journalism, increasing numbers of newsrooms have decided to take up the challenge of articulating editorial policies for social media. Over the past year, news organizations from the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times to the BBC have issued protocols for staff on Facebook, Twitter, and personal blogs and websites. Recently, the Washington Post came under fire for formulating “restrictive” guidelines, after managing editor Raju Narisetti expressed on his Twitter page strong views about war spending and term limits for politicians.

Reading the guidelines and the opinions of their critics is instructive. It shows how to construct a social media ethics for mainstream journalism. Here are some lessons I’ve learned. Guidelines Have a Place in Journalism The first step is to understand the place of guideline writing in journalism ethics. The guidelines should be applications of general ethical principles. It’s about something bigger. 1. 2. 3. Stephen J. Seven questions that keep physicists up at night - space - 23 Oc. Information Is Beautiful | Ideas, issues, concepts, subjects - v. Social media: the best and worst of 2009 | Blog. Social media growth continued to accelerate this year, with more brands integrating social channels into their marketing campaigns.

There are some amazing examples of truly innovative, forward-thinking brands that have effectively used social media to connect with their customers, build engagement and create buzz. However, with just as many companies jumping on the proverbial bandwagon (in an arguably over-hyped space), it’s clear that some brands still “just do not get it".

Here we look back at some of the best (and worst) examples of social media in 2009. Before we look at the examples themselves, it’s important to keep in mind some social media ground rules. The number one rule to remember is that social media are above all, a social tool. Our usual social norms apply just as well in the offline world, and this means treating customers with respect, being open and transparent, and being interesting and engaging. Let’s start on a positive note… 2) Compare the Meerkat 3) Zappos on Twitter. Apple Ads’ New Target: Windows 7 (See the Videos!) | K. Here are the three new Apple (AAPL) commercials trying to take a smack at the launch of Windows 7 (MSFT), the new operating system software from Microsoft.

The “Get a Mac” advertising features the PC and Mac guys, as usual, but are quite a bit meaner than usual. The first, titled “Broken Promises,” is a series of flashbacks to promises made about earlier Windows versions, complete with flip sunglasses. The second, “Teeter Tottering,” has a Windows user switching over to Mac instead of upgrading from Windows XP. “I could stick with what I know, but what I know is pain and frustration,” she says. The third commercial, called “PC News,” has the PC guy as a television anchor, talking to a reporter at the Windows 7 launch, to disastrous results.

Here are the new videos (and you can see all the Apple ads here): MySpace Says Twitter Is Closer Competitor Than Facebook. MySpace’s recent reorientation to emphasize entertainment over friends makes it more similar to Twitter than Facebook, said News Corp Chief Digital Officer Jonathan Miller at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. “Twitter is about asymmetrical relationships,” said Miller, while Facebook users have mostly symmetrical friend relationships. “MySpace is in between.
