Many theories have been advanced about the instrument's ancestry. Guitar. History Before the development of the electric guitar and the use of synthetic materials, a guitar was defined as being an instrument having "a long, fretted neck, flat wooden soundboard, ribs, and a flat back, most often with incurved sides".[1] The term is used to refer to a number of chordophones that were developed and used across Europe, beginning in the 12th century and, later, in the Americas.[2] A 3,300-year-old stone carving of a Hittite bard playing a stringed instrument is the oldest iconographic representation of a chordophone.[3] The term guitar is descended from the Latin word cithara but the modern guitar itself is generally not believed to have descended from the Roman instrument.

A bracket was made, players were ranked — a few were voted in — and we kicked off our Greatest Guitarist of All Time readers poll. It was a mammoth 132-guitarist tournament that would span nearly six months and log close to a half-million votes when all was said and done. Was it a perfect, scientific process? When the dust settled, Eddie Van Halen stood alone as the victor, defeating Queen's Brian May in a wild finals matchup that saw fans clubs, forums and Facebook pages getting involved to support their respective candidates.

" Downing, Jr. (born 27 October 1951 in Yew Tree Estate, West Bromwich) is a semi-retired Grammy Award winning guitarist, songwriter and a founder member of the British heavy metal band Judas Priest. Early life and career[edit] Downing started his first band between the age of 17 and 18 with his second cousin Brian Badhams on bass guitar (now with The Elkie Brooks Band) and drummer Martin Philips. Prior to joining Judas Priest, Downing went to catering college and worked as trainee chef at the Lyttelton Arms[3] in Hagley[4] Downing lived with girlfriend Carol Hiles until 1985 (she had supported him in the early days and when they broke up, he paid off their mortgage and gave her the house[5] In the mid to late 1980s, Downing lived in Spain with Vietnamese born actress/artist Kyme Hoan Tran,[6] who died in 1993[7]

(born July 7, 1981), better known by his stage name Synyster Gates or simply Syn, is an American musician, best known for being the lead guitarist of the band Avenged Sevenfold. Early Life[edit] He studied at the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, California, as part of the Guitar Institute of Music program, studying jazz and classical guitar.[1] After a year or so of being there, he got a call from The Rev asking him if he wanted to "join his band", as lead guitarist. Haner joined rather than continuing his education to become a studio producer.
