Heart Inside Valentines Cake. This is my last valentines related post, and is also what I really made for valentines day. Boyfriend and I don't go crazy on the 14th of Feb, but we don't completely ignore it either. I came home to the lovely surprise of boyfriend making me a yummy dinner and he very much enjoyed his cake while we watched some Mad Men . The inspiration for this cake came from some recent cupcakes on Bake It in a Cake , boyfriend isn't the biggest fan of cupcakes but I was in love with the idea so baked hearts into a cake instead.
I used the recipe for the orange coconut cake I made a little while ago, but replaced the orange for equal parts of lemon and lime. I wanted the cake to be a surprise, so I waited for boyfriend to go to sleep and made it late last night (sorry for the dark photos). I couldn't wait to see what the inside of the cake was like, I crossed my fingers when it was cut today and was very happy to see the hearts looked great.
A very happy valentines day to you all.
White Chocolate-Macadamia Nut Scones. Instructions: Combine flour, the 3 heaping tablespoons sugar, baking powder, white chocolate chips, and chopped macadamia nuts. Cut in the butter. Combine the beaten egg and the half-and-half; add to dry mixture. Stir until moistened. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead 12 to 15 strokes or until nearly smooth. Shape dough into a 10 inch round disc that is approxiamately 1 inch thick. With a 2 1/2-3-inch cookie or pastry cutter, cut out the scones by placing the cutter on the dough and giving it a sharp tap – don't twist it, just lift it up and push the dough out.
Place the scones on a lightly greased baking sheet, brush them lightly with the buttermilk and dust with a little flour. Bake at 400 degrees F on the top shelf of the oven for 10-12 minutes, or until they are well risen and light golden brown, then remove them to a wire rack to cool. Witches’ Brooms. Since this weekend officially brings us into October, we thought what better way to greet it than with Halloween cookies. I’ve had a Betty Crocker cookie book waiting in the wings since last year and was pretty stoked to give this cute idea a try. While the more decorative recipes can sometimes feel tedious and more like a chore, these were pretty easy. And really darn cute, if we do say so ourselves. We thought this was a weird cookie recipe when we realized it has no eggs in it, but whatevs – carry on!
So the dough is simply flour, butter, brown sugar, a little water and vanilla. It’s easiest if you roll out all your cookie balls and cut the pretzel rods, which will form the broom handles, first. Yes, this is the only time I’m ever pleased about being organized. First you take one of the cookie balls and press it onto the pretzel handle. After they’ve cooled, melt your chocolate chips and drizzle a good amount onto the top of each cookie, overlapping onto the pretzel handles. Notes: Chocolaty Melting Snowmen Recipe. Baked Nutella Ravioli. Calling all diehard fans of Nutella! This one’s for you. I came across this recipe on Foodgawker or Pinterest – the two sites are starting to run together sometimes in my braaaains. I’m a relatively new fan of Nutella after we tried a great cookie recipe by Ina Garten, and the cute-as-all-get-out shapes of these Nutella treats were too much to resist in combination with that. They’re incredibly easy to make, easy to turn into a lovely presentation and the low list of ingredients means affordability to top it off.
Sold! You can usually find wonton wrappers in the produce section of grocery stores. If you’re store only has the square wonton wrappers, that’s OK. Next dip your fingertip in a little water and use that to dampen the edge of your wonton wrapper aaaaall the way around. Carefully press the edges together, folding the square ones over to make a triangular shape, pressing till the water-saturated edges stick together.

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that this is the greatest cake I have ever made. Not only does it look like a hilariously over-sized Girl Scout Cookie, it also tastes insanely amazing. Practically the same as said cookie. Samoas are my absolute favorite cookie period. Caramel plus coconut is a win in my book, and the chocolate and shortbread are just added bonuses. The idea for this cake was actually The Hubs idea. I was thinking what I could do in honor of the Girl Scouts this year since last year I re-created all their cookie varieties (here, here, here, here, and here) He said, “why don’t you make a Samoa cake?”
Now I’m not going to lie, this took nearly all day to make, but on the flip side, the people I fed it to responded with cheering and hugs.
