Online design resource Digital Abstracts is putting together a project titled ‘Creative Cards’ where they invited artists and illustrators to design a playing card in their own style.
The result is a deck of 54 unique cards that will be printed in limited copies and distributed between participating designers. The project, aimed at spurring collaboration, features well-known artists such as Timba Smiths, Sara Blake, Joshua Davis, Anton Repponen and David Delin, among many other digital creative ninjas. The double flowered versions favoured by the artist more than 100 years ago have a smaller proportion of internal disc florets. Now scientists from the University of Georgia have worked to understand the genetic reasons behind these mutations, using the techniques of Gregor Mendel, the forefather of genetics, to recreate the flowers. By crossing the common wild variety of sunflower with the double-flowered variety they found that a single, dominant gene was responsible for creating the double-flowered mutation.
