The potential of solar thermal in Europe To provide the European Union and its Member States with substantiated information on the contribution solar thermal can make to the 20% renewable energy target set by the RES Directive (2009/28/EC), detailed surveys were conducted in five representative countries: Austria, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Spain. The information gathered was then extrapolated to the 27 EU countries and the future heating and cooling demand was calculated for 2020, 2030 and 2050, taking into account a decline of the overall energy demand due to energy efficiency measures.

News 16.02.2012: Geographical coverage of PVGIS-CMSAF extended to 50° E and to 35° S to cover all of Africa. PVGIS-CMSAF has also been updated so it now contains data from 1998 to end 2011. 20.09.2010: A new version of the PVGIS interactive web applications is now ready: PVGIS-4. The new version includes a new solar radiation database and several other improvements.
