Watershed festival Paulina Jayne. Another Rainy Saturday » ARS interview: country prodigy Paulina Jayne talks about her amazing summer. Paulina Jayne is a young country singer-songwriter from Michigan who is making a name for herself at the age of sixteen. When you listen to her songs, they are well-constructed country-pop songs that are catchy and have strong choruses. When you listen to songs like “Mississippi Girl,” she also sounds a lot wiser than you might think of someone her age. That means that favorable comparisons to Taylor Swift can be common and expected, and for good reason. She’s quite the prodigy. She’s been a prolific songwriter through much of her young life, and has written and recorded with some of the best musicians in Nashville. Shortly after her set at Watershed Fest, I talked to Paulina Jayne about balancing being a musician with being a student, the meteoric career she’s enjoyed thus far and what she has coming up for the remainder of 2012.

How did you get into writing songs and making music? I was nine years old when I started writing music. I’m going to be completely honest.

Blog.nextbigsound. Seems brand affiliation is a hot ticket for big hits - everybody’s talking jingles this week. Country singer Jason Aldean released his new single Take A Little Ride last week, and on Tuesday Billboard reported that he is making a small, but otherwise significant alteration to the lyrics in order to accomodate his new endorsement deal with Coors. If you think this makes him a sell-out, you’re probably not aware of just how many songs and artists are affiliated with brand names. Even before endorsement, the release has been a success. The song quickly jumped to top spot on the iTunes all-genre Singles chart and Aldean’s numbers are up overall - with close to a 40 percent boost in Rdio plays, a 24 percent increase in Wikipedia views, and about 45,000 plays on MySpace in the week following.

Not a Country fan? While no one paid him to do it, another big-named Country star, Toby Keith, had a somewhat unexpected smash hit with Red Solo Cup last year. Brands and music go hand in hand. By Refe Tuma | @refeup Over the past few years, different variations of the same question have repeatedly bubbled up on the music blogs: has the internet killed music fandom? If music fans are indeed a dying breed, the industry and art form of music face a problem of apocalyptic proportions. After all, fans keep the amps humming, the records spinning, and the musicians eating. In fact, many of the experimental ‘Music 2.0’ business models from the last three to five years tend to rely more on the most die-hard fans than ever before.

Without these’superfans’ there are no successful Kickstarter campaigns, no subscription revenues, no sales of collector’s edition physical releases. Thankfully, the fans haven’t gone anywhere, and they aren’t likely to any time soon. The internet hasn’t killed music fandom; fandom is alive and well. This misunderstanding, in turn, masks the more accurate question: how does the internet affect the behaviors of music listeners? Will the Real Fans Please Log On.
