Behind the Scenes: Steven Soderbergh on ‘High Flying Bird’

Photo: Courtesy of Netflix It was a late-winter afternoon in 2018, and Steven Soderbergh was premiering his newest movie aboard a Manhattan–bound Amtrak train. Earlier that day, in Philadelphia, the director had finished production on the basketball-business drama High Flying Bird, about a quietly insurrectional sports agent, played by André Holland, who is trying to outmaneuver the NBA during a lockout. Now he and Holland were zipping back to New York, watching portions of a rough version of the movie that Soderbergh had finished editing just hours after filming wrapped.

The 56-year-old director is famously efficient: On his Cinemax series The Knick — on which he served as director, cinematographer, and editor — he cut together footage while being driven back from the set. Soderbergh’s obsession with editing began decades ago, when it was the only job he could get. Using his MacBook Pro, Soderbergh could even edit on the train. License Music For YouTube Videos. Venus Optics Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe Lens for Canon EF VE2414CC.

Described as "weird but genius," the Canon EF-mount Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe Lens from Venus Optics is a truly unique lens designed for close-up shooting.

Distinguished by its long and slender lens barrel, this macro lens provides a 2:1 maximum magnification with a 1.5' minimum focusing distance and a close 0.8" minimum working distance. Even with such a close working distance the lens measures 1.3' long, placing you at a comfortable distance to photograph nearby subjects. Also, as a wide-angle lens, greater depth of field is afforded when compared to traditional telephoto macro lenses, allowing for greater detail in the background with less subject isolation.

The optical design includes both extra-low dispersion and extra-refractive index elements, which help to suppress chromatic and spherical aberrations for a high degree of clarity, color accuracy, and sharpness. I love the pockets and the almost perfect shapes that allow for everything to be securely stored. There is 2 things that bug me about the Case. The Wheels are on the wrong side. The Wheels are awesome and you can pull it super smooth behind you. But they are on the wrong side. Besides of these 2 things its an amazing Case. Hey Jonathan, thanks for the review. 10 Simple Rules of Visual Storytelling - Visual Stories - Medium

I feel that one in particular demands further discussion: Visual Storytelling. Visual storytelling is simply the way most brands will decide to go in 2016 & beyond, as they try to tell their story to their customers. Why? Pinterest, Instagram, Snapchat, Vine… All these trendy social media sites are based on visuals. “Facts bore, stories sell” is a common saying.

But I will go even further (and probably annoy some master storytellers), by saying: To drive home this point, and before I delve into the how-to, the numbers in this infographic should be more than enough: Creator Subscription. Making a TED-Ed Lesson: Synesthesia and playing cards. Making a TED-Ed Lesson: Two ways to animate slam poetry. Max Fleischer, creator of the Betty Boop and Popeye cartoons, was the first to patent the process of rotoscoping in 1917: His brother Dave dressed up in a clown suit and was rotoscoped to create the character of Koko the Clown, one of the earliest cartoon stars of the Fleischers’ Out of the Inkwell series: Rotoscoping was used by Walt Disney’s animators in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), and was extensively employed in later productions, primarily as a means of motion analysis.

Other notable rotoscoped works from animation history: Princess Iron Fan (Tien Shan Gong Zhu - 1941) was China’s first animated feature film: The Tale of the Fisherman and the Goldfish (Skazka o rybake i rybke - 1950) is one of many Russian animated films from this time period to extensively use rotoscoping; the technique was considered in keeping with the documentary ethos of state-decreed Socialist Realism during the Soviet years:www.youtube.com/watch?

Get Involved. Lessons Worth Sharing.
