The consortium will build Lines B and C of the project. Line B will comprise 11.9 kilometres of tunnels and three stations. Line C will be 13km long and contain six stations – two of which will be major interchanges. Isolux Corsan, Kolin İnşaat Turizm Sanayi ve Ticaret and Haif will now start official negotiations with the client and it is expected that the signature will be signed in the coming months.
The 11.9km Line B section of the contract involves the construction of three stations and Line C is 13km long and has six stations, including two major interchanges. The scope of the contract includes tunnelling as well as the execution of stations and interchange stations and associated works. Tunnels are divided in the different sections according to different construction methods: 19,616m of mined tunnels, 8,740m of tunnels built by tunnel boring maching and 4,105m of cut and cover tunnels. The metro network is set to be built in three phases with a total budget estimated at $16.5 billion (SAR 62 billion). Last November, Kuala Lumpur’s transport agency Prasarana was appointed to provide consultancy services during phase 1. Interested bidders include Nesma and Partners, Orascom Construction Industries, and Saudi Binladin Group. The metro is part of the wider Makkah Public Transport Program (MPTP), which is a $16.5 billion (SAR 60 billion) plan to develop the city’s transport systems.
