Men, Will You Vow to Lead? Yesterday, we kicked off the Real Marriage sermon series at all Mars Hill churches. The opening sermon was entitled, “New Marriage, Same Spouse.” A biblical understanding of marriage is that men are to be the spiritual leaders in their families who should work towards leaving a great gospel legacy for future generations, a topic I preached on last month out of Genesis 3, 1 Timothy 2 and 3, and Ephesians 5.
Towards the end of this Sunday’s sermon, I challenged the husbands in the room to stand up and take a vow that they would lead their family well. I then asked them to each pray over his wife, to serve her Communion, and to worship together holding hands. It was a moving experience to see hundreds of men stand, take the vow, and pray over their wives in the service. Below is a clip from that part of the sermon. I think the best way to identify a potential leader is to ask people: “Who do you enjoy working with? Who do you respect in the workforce?”
The names you hear in answer to those questions are the kind of people you want to identify as potential leaders and promote. We’ve got a preachers’ Qualifying Day coming up at Mars Hill Church that I’m excited about. Currently, we have 50 or so elders at Mars Hill and maybe that many more in training. Some of the men are sensing a call to preach and cover the Sundays when I’m out of the pulpit.
So, we thought we’d have some fun with it and have a day when they each take the stage at Mars Hill Ballard to preach. We’ll give each preacher a different text one week in advance. They’ll show up to preach, and we’ll evaluate them. And, you are welcome to come sit in if you like for all or part of the day. Only three men will preach this round, but there will be other rounds forthcoming. This will be fun…for some of us.
