Government To Reduce Fluoride Levels in Drinking Water Because Too Much Fluoride Can Cause Health Problems

Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a reduction in allowable fluoride levels in U.S. drinking water: HHS’ proposed recommendation of 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water replaces the current recommended range of 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams. This updated recommendation is based on recent EPA and HHS scientific assessments to balance the benefits of preventing tooth decay while limiting any unwanted health effects.

As AP notes: Some scientists also have found that fluoride can cause damage to children's liver and kidneys, and to other parts of the body as well. Here is the 2006 National Academy of Science report discussed above. It is apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain and the body by direct and indirect means. Dr. Time Magazine notes: (page 358).

Chinese fluoride is a homeland security matter » Letters » Cumberland Times-News (Build 20100722155716) February 28, 2010 — The Pure Water Committee of Western Maryland Inc. was formed in 1960 as a grass roots network of citizens with a 50-year-old mission to educate the public of the complete fraud of the practice called water fluoridation.

Recently, it has come to my attention in an engineering report for the city of Boulder, Colo., that they did an evaluation of fluoridation chemicals and sources and found that much of the fluoride chemicals used for water fluoridation are now coming out of China with arsenic and lead levels of 50 and 40 milligrams respectively per bag and non-existent regulatory monitoring of the salt or acid compounds from these imports. This type of trade from a country with a track record of lead paint on toys to antifreeze in cough syrup medicine is completely unacceptable. After visiting the Frostburg Water Filtration Plant on Feb. 23, it has come to my attention that Frostburg has sodium fluoride bags with no source or import information on them. Green Tea...

Schuld/PFPC OPEN LETTER TO: Susan Cameron-BlockHost - Current Health Issues Dear Susan, I am writing this letter with the intent to inform on various issues associated with the use of fluorides, especially as it relates to green and black teas, and to voice our concern about the continued promotion of green tea as a drink"beneficial to one's health" on your radio show "Current Health Issues". Tea is very high in fluoride content. Tea leaves accumulate more fluoride (from pollution of soil and air) than any other edible plant (1,2,3). While in 1976 a Belgian analysis showed content of between 50 and 125 ppm fluoride in 15 varieties of tea (3), a Polish study in 1995 found fluoride content of up to 340 ppm in 16 varieties of black tea (5). Some British and African studies from the 1990's showed a daily fluoride intake of between 5.8 mgs and 9 mgs a day from tea alone (9,10,11).

Thyroid Medication. Political Mischaracterization of Fluoridation Opposition Dismays Scientists. CANTON, N.Y., June 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Scientists representing the Fluoride Action Network (FAN) strongly object to recent mischaracterizations of fluoridation opponents by political pundits Rachel Maddow, Keith Olbermann and others in conjunction with Senator Harry Reid's Nevada re-election campaign.

Political Mischaracterization of Fluoridation Opposition Dismays Scientists

"Fluoridation opposition is science-based and growing," says Paul Connett, PhD, FAN Executive Director, who has co-authored the upcoming book, "The Case Against Fluoride: How Hazardous Waste Ended Up in Our Drinking Water and the Bad Science and Powerful Politics that Keep it There. " Co-authors are James Beck, MD, PhD, professor emeritus of medical physics at the University of Alberta in Calgary; and Spedding Micklem, DPhil, professor emeritus at Edinburgh University. "FAN's website has a wealth of scientific information indicating that water fluoridation is neither safe nor effective," says Connett. "Topical treatments like fluoridated toothpaste are readily available. Debate about addition of sodium fluoride to Mount Pleasant water continues. Editor’s note: This is the second in a series about fluoride in the water of Mount Pleasant.

The Mount Pleasant City Commission’s decision to temporarily reduce the amount of sodium fluoride added to the municipal water supply has not gone without controversy. Some of the commissioners themselves disagree with the decision. “I think when the people voted to put fluoride in the water, they wanted it in a proportion that will reduce tooth decay,” Vice Mayor Bruce Kilmer said. “I think we should take it back to a vote of the people and not (reduce fluoride levels) on our own.” However, Commissioner Kathleen Ling, head of the Fluoride Task Force that made the recommendation to the commission, emphasized the commission’s decision was within the boundaries of the 2005 fluoride ballot language. The 2005 ballot language regarding fluoride levels states, “the Commission by resolution shall have the authority, from time to time, to change the proportions thereof.”
