Apple to offer next iPad in gold -- report - CNET. Forget Windows 9. In an unexpected twist, Microsoft will be going straight to double digits from Windows 8 as it faces a challenging future for its operating system. SAN FRANCISCO -- Microsoft just said no to 9. The follow-on to the current Windows 8 operating system will be known as Windows 10. Originally codenamed Windows Threshold, the new operating system essentially does away with the dependency on the tiled "Metro" user interface that Microsoft had attempted to implement across its entire device line, from desktop PCs to Surface tablets and Windows Phone devices. In its place is a combination of the so-called live tiles, present in areas like the new Start Menu, and a more classic Windows experience that aims to please both touch and keyboard-and-mouse users.
Windows 10 is such a substantial leap, according to Microsoft's executive VP of operating systems, Terry Myerson, that the company decided it would be best to skip over Windows 9, the widely expected name for the next version. I’ve posted several times here about how much I’ve been looking forward to seeing the Kickstarter-funded Battle of the Bulge iPad game from Shenandoah Studio.
It’s a turn-based military strategy game in the style of old board games of this type. I grew up playing those sort of board games, and loved playing them despite the fact I have a younger brother who was and is a far, far better player and strategist than I am. So when I first saw this iPad game as a Kickstarter project I was filled with excitement at the prospect of seeing it come to the iPad.
My first hope was that it would meet its funding target – and it did and even substantially exceeded it. Fast forward a few months and I have been lucky enough to be one of the beta testers for the game leading up to its upcoming release. 1) The developers hope to have the game in the iPad App Store by Christmas. 2) The game is looking, and playing, great.
