NewChopperBuildersHandbook. Pirate4x4.Com. I'm sure for some, when you first unpack your bender, you’ll be lost. I don’t blame you, it looks like some sort of medieval torture devise… It’ll have some very confusing instructions and list of calculations that might as well be written in some ancient language. So you’ll throw some tube in the thing, pull the handle, and Ohhhh YEahhhh, you’ve bent tube with your bare hands! (In my best Tim Allen voice…aruh… aruhh... arhhh) But now you’ve got a bent piece of tube, with no way to know where to start, or stop.
I’d like to share some simple things I’ve learned, after what seems like miles of wasted tube. Yes, there is another way to do it! You don’t need some big computer program, a degree in math or even have to know more than just basic addition and subtraction. Here are some basic tools you should have…. A good stand is very important too.
Again, this is by no means the only way, but in my opinion the EASIEST way to START. Once you get that bent, take a look at how the tube “looks.” Making a Sissy Bar with Zac Doom. The premier issue of Show Class magazine had a righteously simple and to-the-point How-to article by Zach from Heavy. We thought it would be cool to share it on here, since building one should be within about anyone's reach as long as you have access to a torch and a welder. For less than a case of beer, you can end up with a tidy addition to your bike that makes packing your outlaw freedom kit easier and of course, classier. Thanks, Zach and Show Class for sharing the feature.
So you need a sissy bar for that up-coming road trip...? Find a good welding surface and lay/ set bolts where the OG sissy bar you’re using as a template bends. Kevin wanted his sissy bar 6’ tall - this is what inspired the whole “custom” height, and got the ball rolling on this project. Line up the pieces in the jig to get an idea of what’s gonna happen in the end. Kevin welded two 6’ lengths of 5/8” round stock together at the top. You’re basically replicating the same bends as the OG sissy bar.
You are DONE! Making Fender Struts with Special '79. Okay, it's time to tackle fender mounting on your project, but you want the finished assembly to be rock solid. Can't blame you for that. In this installment of ChopCult Metal Shop, guest fabricator Jason Roche at Special '79 attacks the problem with customary skill. Class is now in session. The materials for these struts can vary, but my choice for these struts is to use 304 stainless, 5/16”-18 x 1” threaded bungs and matching counterbore bungs for allen head cap bolts available at Lowbrow Customs. I’ll be using a TIG welder to weld these struts but you can chose a MIG or gas setup if you’re more comfortable with that.
The first thing you need to do is to determine the connection points where you’ll want to bolt the struts. At this point, I cut one of the 5/16”-18 x 1” bungs in half and turn down one side in the lathe to ½” in diameter and 1/8” in depth. You can view the largest selection of sprung solo seats and seat springs and solo seat mounts from around the world at Lowbrow Customs. Adding a solo seat to your motorcycle can make a huge difference in appearance and riding comfort, especially on a rigid framed bike. Here Kyle from Lowbrow Customs shows the installation of a solo seat step-by-step on his first Triumph chopper build with a David Bird hardtail frame.
The first step in installing a solo seat is getting the necessary parts, which include a solo seat, front pivot or seat mount, a pair of springs, and spring mounts. Spring mounts can be fabricated or bought ready to weld on. Mount your solo seat on the pivot. SaveSave. If you dont have your own welder you will need to get someone to tag in the mounting bolts, this is a pretty quick and easy job which should only cost a few bucks! For this seat we are using a scrap piece of 2.5 ml sheet.
Use a cut-off disc to cut out your shape, these discs are nice and thin and manoeuvre around curves well, avaliable at most hardware stores for about $5. Once you have it cut out, clean up the sharp edges with a file or if you have one a polishing disc. Once you have cleaned up the rough edges around your drill holes, its time to beat this thing into shape.
The last part of building the pan is to weld in four mounting bolts. Two for your front bracket and two spring fixture points. Time to clean up the pan with a wire brush and give it a coat of rust proof paint, aerosol or brush on. Tech: Armature de selle. Billy Lane's Choppers Inc. Chopper-Shamrock's.
