Published at 12:01AM, April 24 2012 A landmark victory for Revenue & Customs to deny wealthy investors £117 million in tax relief has ushered in a new era of intolerance towards tax avoidance by the rich. Eclipse 35, a film investment partnership whose members include Sir Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United manager, was barred from claiming tax relief on a complex £1 billion deal with Disney. If the 2007 scheme had succeeded, each of the 289 members of Eclipse 35 could have enjoyed an average of £404,000 in tax relief on a personal investment of £173,000. Other investors included Sven-Göran Eriksson, the former England manager, as well as bankers, chief executive officers and hedge-fund managers. The decision of a tax tribunal could have a wide-reaching effect on dozens of other film schemes as well as other investments designed to achieve high tax reliefs, experts said.
ONCE the quintessence of Englishness—it has Etonian board members, and emerged 125 years ago from the royal armaments factory—Arsenal Football Club has been coached by Arsène Wenger, a Frenchman, since 1996. The north London team usually fields more French players than English ones. The Eurostar trains to and from Paris even zoom past the club’s Emirates Stadium, a corner of Islington that is forever France. The Frenchification of Arsenal is perhaps the most famous example of a broader French influx to London. This, too, began in earnest in the 1990s as the city boomed with Britain’s economy (though there has been a French presence since the Huguenot migration of the 17th century).
THE Hand & Racquet sits in Whitcomb Street, just behind the National Gallery in London. A good position, you might think, with tourists passing. A good name, too, recalling a now-vanished tennis court from Charles II’s day.
