Asia Pacific's largest green business community | Sustainability and Environment | News, Opinion, Events, Press Releases, Jobs, Directory, Resources. China has taken on General Electric Co. (GE) and Western peers that control the $70 billion wind-turbine market, striving to repeat its 2010 coup when the Asian nation sold more than half the world’s solar panels for the first time.
Armed with at least $15.5 billion in state-backed credit, China’s biggest windmill makers Sinovel Wind Group Co. and Xinjiang Goldwind Science & Technology Co. won their first major foreign orders in the past year. Both plan to set up plants abroad, including China’s first in the U.S., easing entry into markets for delivering machines that can weigh 750 tons each. Sinovel and Goldwind may counter the quality concerns of customers and overtake Denmark’s Vestas Wind Systems A/S as the biggest supplier by 2015, a Bloomberg New Energy Finance survey forecast.
That can erode sales and margins for suppliers such as GE and Vestas that already face cutbacks in European subsidies and a 22 percent plunge in turbine prices from their 2008 peak. China and Local Installers — the Big Winners in the Solar and Wind Energy Price Wars. Clean Power Published on October 1st, 2011 | by David L Roberts Solar installation by Clean Energy Center Reports from the clean energy industry show China has surpassed the U.S. in market share and pricing for PV solar panels and wind turbines, while offering comparable quality and reliability.
The consequence of this recent Chinese dominance has caused the demise of companies like Solyndra and Evergreen, the most visible examples of bankruptcies in the pipeline for U. S. manufacturers. And these sales difficulties have occurred despite federal tax incentives and rebates from many utilities still being in place, such as NVEnergy’s (Nevada) Solar, Wind & Hydro Generations programs. Some short-term good news from both the solar and wind associations, SEIA and AWEA, come from reports of 70+% growth in installations Q2 2011 over 2010, as well as year over year. One such installer is the Clean Energy Center (CEC) in Reno, Nevada.
CEC was founded by Rich Hamilton on Earth Day 2008. 24 Governors Ask Obama to Focus on Wind Energy Deployment. Clean Power Published on August 26th, 2011 | by Guest Contributor This is a news release from the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) that I thought was worth quickly highlighting. Good to see so many governors from around the country speaking up for wind energy. It is highly needed. Iowa (Aug. 24, 2011)—A coalition of 24 governors from both major parties and each region of the country has asked the administration to take a series of steps to provide a more favorable business climate for the development of wind energy, starting with a seven-year extension of the Production Tax Credit (PTC) and the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) to provide stable, low tax rates for wind-generated electricity. A letter from the governors, sent last month to the White House, has since been made public by the Governors Wind Energy Coalition.
“Although tax credits for wind energy have long enjoyed bipartisan support, they are scheduled to expire next year. The governors’ letter also calls for: U.S. Report: China to crank up 2015 renewable target - 30 Aug 2011. Wind Energy News {10 More Stories of the Week} Éolien : améliorations techniques et bridage réduisent les nuisances sonores.
" MOEA unveils Taiwan wind power development plan | Eco-Business. Taiwan will boost its wind power capacity from 530 megawatts to 4,200 megawatts by 2030 under an ambitious renewable energy plan unveiled July 18 by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. The project, which is expected to generate NT$500 billion (US$17.27 billion) in business for Taiwan’s equipment manufacturers and component suppliers, calls for the installation of 1,050 wind turbines on land and offshore sites.
“Taiwan will install 450 land-based wind turbines with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts by 2020,” MOEA Minister Shih Yen-shiang said, adding that the remaining units will be set up in the following 10 years. At present, Taiwan has around 300 land-based turbines situated mainly along the western coastline and in outlying Penghu County. The new units will be able to generate 12.5 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, or 3.3 percent of Taiwan’s total power generation. These turbines will double renewable energy to 16 percent of Taiwan’s total capacity. 10 Wind Energy Stories {Weekly Round-Up} | CleanTechnica: Cleantech innovation news and views. Wind energy supplies over 2% of total U.S. electricity and more than 10% of total electricity in four states. In 2010, wind accounted for 25% of new electricity capacity, representing $11 billion in investments. The US has lost its lead to China as the fastest growing wind market, but it's still number 2. Still, 2010 was a trying year.
New wind capacity was much less than in 2008 and 2009, because of the "delayed impact of the global financial crisis, relatively low natural gas and wholesale electricity prices, and slumping overall demand for energy," says Ryan Wiser, one of the authors of a DOE Lawrence Berkeley Lab study released this week. As a result, roughly 5 gigawatts (GW) of new wind capacity were connected to the U.S. grid in 2010, compared to nearly 10 GW in 2009 and over 8 GW in 2008.
