Lessons from Raising Venture Capital for the Serious Entrepreneur: The Market | Romain Goday. There’s a very interesting point made by Dermot Berkery in his book, Raising Capital for the Serious Entrepreneur, that I think is worth sharing with all those startups that want to receive the interest VC industry. It seems that entrepreneurs do not focus enough on the market. It is essential to demonstrate to the VCs that the startup can achieve sustainable market power in market large enough to justify the investment. Market power only will allow the company to extract a disproportionately high return on capital. Professional investors will need to articulate and document their investment thesis; therefore the business plan should construct the following arguments: How will the company capture market powerHow long the window of opportunity for exploiting it isHow will the market power be monetized Demonstrate the absolute potential value of the opportunity for founders and investors Potential for accelerated growth in a big, accessible market Capable, ambitious, trustworthy management.
