eBay Alternative for Artisans: Etsy Expands Your Exposure — eCom

eBay Alternative Watch: Etsy Readies For Holiday Sales Popular niche alternative site, Etsy offers crafty sellers a platform for selling all things handmade. The site actively supports those who choose to create and buy alternatives to mass-produced objects. Conceived by Rob Kalin in early 2005, Etsy was born out of the founder's desire to exhibit and sell his own creations online. Since its official launch in June 2005, this unique online marketplace now boasts more than 1.5 million members of which 170,000 are sellers. Last year Etsy says its total gross merchandise sales reached $26 million and Etsy expects that gross sales figure to reach $87 million for 2008. Online marketplaces are currently in full holiday swing, and Etsy is no exception.

It's a treasure house of bags, scarves, jewellery, pottery, candles, quilts, paper goods, soft toys and similar stuff, all of it handmade. Indeed, many items are offered on a made-to-order basis, so you can specify what you want. Or what your mother might want. Not that geeks are completely excluded.

Etsy: eBay for arts and crafts | Technology

Etsy, the website which provides an online marketplace for artists and crafters to sell their handmade goods, has proved hugely popular since launching three years ago. It now boasts more than 1.3 million members and has even been touted as a potential successor to eBay. But in an interview with the Guardian's Tech Weekly podcast , chief executive Maria Thomas said the company needs to focus on a number of challenges before it can reach its potential. Among the problems she highlighted was fraud, which has been a growing concern for the site's buyers and sellers. http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2008/oct/15/etsy-arts-and-crafts-online
It's not uncommon to meet people who are convinced that running an online store is a piece of cake, and less work than a traditional job. While that may be true for a rare few online sellers, most successful merchants - especially those peddling art or crafts they create themselves - work harder and longer hours than other jobs might require. But for many of them the other benefits of being self-employed outweigh the extra work. While eBay used to be the main marketplace for sellers looking to distribute their items without setting up their own e-commerce site, much of their handmade and craft market has moved to Etsy.com . http://suite101.com/article/how-to-decide-if-selling-on-etsy-is-worth-it-a169471
