For those unable to attend, we wanted to provide information concerning useful resources for those interested in small-scale poultry and green house production. If you have any questions concerning the resources listed here, please contact the OSU Wasco County Extension office at 541-296-5494 or the WSU Klickitat County Extension office at 509-773-5817.

In each of these examples, the farm produces fewer than 1,000 chickens per year, selling all of the birds directly to customers. At the bottom of this page, we have included sample budgets based on actual production costs and revenues from three small broiler production operations in different regions of Washington. We found that, as an add-on to an existing farming operation, a poultry enterprise is capable of contributing net income. However, at this level of production, poultry sales are not expected to provide more than 10 percent of the total annual farm income for any of these operations. Farm A This farm is located in San Juan County, Washington. The budget analysis for Farm A (below) represents a composite of four years of actual operations.

A Wisconsin family nets between $2 and $6 per bird for their pasture-raised poultry, and partners with two other producers in processing and marketing. A New Mexico producer who rotates birds across his property year-round has seen dramatic improvements to his desert soil. And a Wyoming producer was able to quit a full-time, off-the-farm job to stay home and raise pastured poultry with help from her school-age kids. With those examples and more from around the country, the bulletin touches on the pasturing system's many opportunities to improve profits, environment and rural family life.
