Deadly floods fail to break Brisbane. Updated Thu 13 Jan 2011, 10:49pm AEDT Many Brisbane residents have taken the ongoing flood crisis in their stride, even though large parts of the city remain submerged and the death toll from south-east Queensland's floods continues to rise.

Deadly floods fail to break Brisbane

Extra police are being brought in to patrol vast flooded areas in Brisbane and Ipswich to provide security and prevent looting. The extra security comes as the number of people confirmed dead in this week's floods rose to 15 today after the recovery of bodies in the Brisbane suburb of Durack, at Myall Creek near Dalby on the western Darling Downs, and at Grantham in the Lockyer Valley.

Sixty-one people were still missing today, with police holding "grave fears" for 12 people who disappeared when homes were destroyed by a wall of water in the Lockyer Valley west of Brisbane late on Monday. Huge areas of Brisbane and Ipswich remained underwater after the Brisbane River peaked at below the 1974 flood level early this morning.

The Premier, Anna Bligh, has warned that the worst may be yet to come. ''This disaster is a long way from over,'' Ms Bligh said yesterday while touring the flood-affected regions with the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard. Residents in Rockhampton and Condamine were evacuated, some forcibly, from their homes yesterday as the towns braced for the possibility of the worst flooding on record. Police have been deployed in Rockhampton and Emerald to prevent looting. The river reached 9.2 metres on this afternoon, short of the 9.4m peak predicted. "It is good news," Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Brad Carter said. "It looks like it may have stabilised. " The weather bureau also said the river wasn't expected to rise much further. "It's just going to wobble around 9.2m now," hydrologist Peter Baddiley said.

"We might get a reading of 9.25m at the next reading, we might not, but it's pretty much holding steady. " Brisbane workers flee Queensland floods as river breaks banks. Water lies outside the State Library after the Brisbane River burst it banks.

Roads are becoming choked as people leave work to secure their homes from floodwaters, which are closing a growing number of roads.

Ferry services have been shut down and rising flood waters have cut train services north and west of the city. Riverside suburbs are worse affected, including Milton, where Douglas Street, Camford Street, Eagle Terrace and Huxham Terrace were inundated. Office towers on Eagle Street, right on the river, are being emptied, along with businesses in Fortitude Valley. PM tours worst flood-affected areas. Sharks In Queensland Floods. Sharks In Queensland Floods

Goodna residents are navigating their flooded streets in fear after unconfirmed sightings of bull sharks in the area. Councillor Paul Tully from the Ipswich suburb, located to the west of Brisbane, said local man Steve Bateman had spotted a shark swimming around shops this morning. He said he saw a shark swimming around the shopping centre here and I believe him.

There were other unconfirmed sightings yesterday but Queensland Police have been unable to verify the claims. Cr Tully said Mr Bateman believed the shark to be a bull shark. Advertisement "This isn't the kind of man to lie," Cr Tully said. "To have a shark in the main street of Goodna, well, that's probably something that's never happened before. " A Queensland Police spokeswoman said residents were advised to stay out of floodwaters. "They're skittish creatures as well so they're likely to flee from loud noises or big splashing.
