As I sit down to write this article tonight there’s a fly buzzing around the room. It’s driving me insane. Every few seconds it makes a pass by my ear and I lunge out to try and bat the life out of the thing. I can’t finish a sentence without this pest distracting me from the task at hand. I’m not good at killing flies. http://www.lifehack.org/articles/technology/your-guide-to-apps-that-eliminate-distractions.html

Your Guide to Apps that Eliminate Distractions - Stepcase Lifeha

Windows only: Freeware Backup application Personal Backup offers lots of flexibility for backing up important files both locally and over a network using FTP or SFTP protocols. The application itself is a bit daunting and cumbersome at first with numerous menus and features, so novices may want to stick to the easy-to-configure (and super easy to understand) wizard. However, the feature-set makes a lot of sense given the richness of the offerings, including the ability to back up multiple files into a single zip file, encrypting file backups, compressing files, and more.

The screen has never struck me as a good medium for reading longer works on, and I think differently with a pen in hand than with a keyboard under my fingers. That said, Word 2007 puts a lot of useful tools at your fingertips for proofreading and editing . Of course, there’s spell-check, which is a useful tool when used wisely and carefully (I can’t tell you how many papers I’ve read by students who apparently ran spell-check and simply accepted whatever changes Word recommended).

Windows only: Free software YouTube File Hack is a standalone application and Internet Explorer integrated menu item that downloads videos to your desktop from the popular video sharing site. Simply run the application, enter the URL of the YouTube video you want to view offline, and press the Download button. When all is said and done, you'll have an FLV file for watching offline (we recommend the free VLC player to do so). To use the Internet Explorer integration, navigate to any web page, right click on a YouTube video link, and choose the "Download this YouTube Video" option from the right-click menu. (Note that the "Download this" menu item displays regardless of whether a video is present or not.)
