SOL 3 - Native Americans/Archaeology. Why Did Pueblo Indians ...

Pueblos indigenas. Native Heritage. American Indians. Petroglyph National Monument, New Mexico. Hotels The nearest hotels to Petroglyph National Monument are in west Albuquerque, around exit 155 of I-40.

Access The national monument, to which entry is free, is well signed from both nearby interstate highways (I-15 and I-40), and reached by wide city streets through residential districts. First stop should be at the visitor center, situated at the foot of the mesa along Western Trail NW, from where the most interesting site (Rinconada Canyon, which has the longest trail) is one mile south, while the other two are a few miles further north. Off-trail hiking is possible though not encouraged, and the mesa edge stretches for over ten miles within the monument so there is plenty of scope for discovering new petroglyphs, away from the popular areas. Rinconada Canyon Parking lot for Rinconada Canyon is just off busy Unser Boulevard, at the junction with St Josephs Avenue.

Military Bases The national monument is entirely surrounded by the White Sands Missile Range; just east is the Holloman Air Force Base, and a few miles north is one of the space shuttle landing sites. The space theme is reflected in the nearby town of Alamogordo, home to the International Space Hall of Fame and the Space Theater. The dunes extend north into the missile range for another 12 miles. Approach The main road past White Sands National Monument is US 70; this (and the dunes) is closed to all traffic for a few hours once or twice a week as test missiles are fired overhead.

A paved road (the Dunes Drive) leads from the visitor center at the monument entrance on US 70 to the start of the sands 2 miles north. The edge dunes are just a few feet high and support some plant life, with several species of grass, yucca and saltbush managing to survive at scattered points, but further into the monument there is little or no vegetation, just an unbroken white landscape. Trails Camping Wildlife.

White Sands National Monument - White Sands National Monument. Sangre de Cristo scenery above Taos Ski Valley Regions[edit] Carson National Forest, including Wheeler Peak Wilderness Latir Peak Wilderness Cruces Basin Wilderness Santa Fe National Forest, including Pecos Wilderness Cities[edit] Several small villages on the slopes of the mountains, including (note: "W" means town on the west slopes, "E" on the east -- the distinction is important for planning travel): Angel Fire (E) Chimayó (W) Cimarron (E) Cowles (E) Cundiyo (W) Eagle Nest (E) Mora (E) Ocate (E) Pecos (E) Peñasco (W) Picuris Pueblo (W) Questa (W) Red River (E/W) Sapello (E) Truchas (W) Other destinations[edit] Understand[edit] The highest summit in the Sangres in New Mexico is Wheeler Peak, elevation 13,161', a comparatively undistinguished bump on a ridge line above Taos.

Towns on the eastern slopes of the Sangres tend to have cultural ties to the Great Plains, while the ones on the west side are more closely tied to the Hispanic and Native American settlements along the Rio Grande. Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The Sangre de Cristos are fault block mountains with major fault lines running along both the east and west sides of the mountains. In places, there are also fault lines cutting right through the mountain chain. The mountains were pushed up about 27 million years ago, pretty much as one big chunk of rock. On the west side is the San Luis Valley with the Rio Grande Rift Zone running down the middle. On the southeast side is the Raton Basin with a quiet but still active volcano field. On the northeast side are the Wet Mountains and the Front Range, areas of pre-Cambrian rock raised up during the Colorado Orogeny some 1.7 billion years ago. The Blanca Massif is also pre-Cambrian rock while the main body of the Sangres themselves is composed of Permian-Pennsylvanian rock and a mix of igneous intrusions, conglomerates and shale that is only about 250 million years old.
