Dinner Tonight: Sopa de Ajo (Garlic Soup) [Photographs: Nick Kindelsperger] Why is garlic soup so satisfying? It's one of the simplest soups to make, and yet it comes out soothing and utterly calming. Some people have chicken soup; I prefer this stuff. Which isn't to say all are created equal. I adore this version from Daisy Martinez, which I wrote about over three years ago, and saw no need to try out something different. First was the use of bread. The final flourish is a poached egg, which almost makes the soup too rich. Caching In. Treasure hunters around metro Grand Rapids aren't much into plundering, and their maps appear on digital displays powered by batteries rather than decomposing parchment with secret clues missing.
But you couldn't tell the difference between a modern day treasure seeker who engages in geocaching and a pirate looking for lost booty when it comes to enthusiasm. They are just discovering a different type of fortune. "We've found more parks and public areas that we never knew existed, both here in Grand Rapids, and in other states and countries," says Marc Ellens, a software engineer at X-Rite, Inc. ( in Kentwood. As one bumper sticker for geocaching puts it: "Use multi-million dollar satellites to find Tupperware. " "It's kind of cool [that we] use technology -- very, very expensive technology -- to do something fun and cheap outside," says Ryan Norman, 28, who found his first cache last month using his brother's GPS. "It's pretty versatile. Home Page | Flat World Knowledge. Handmade Accessories on Etsy - Cherry Blossom Belt Buckle - Sterling silver, copper and brass by eamonellery.
Blood Orange Caramels with Toasted Almonds and Sea Salt. If you heard a giant thud last week or a heavy sigh sift through your window then chances are it was me. I apologize for the interruption. You see, I just managed to wrap up two cookbook projects within the same week, a feat that has surprised even the most doubting me. I suppose this is what happens when you work with amazing people.
They will forever have your back. One book involved sandwiches, and boy, do I mean sandwiches. The other was a lovely vegan cookbook from a woman that is sometimes known as one half of the skinny bitch empire. Although I know the B word is used solely as empowerment it’s not a word I’d use to describe her. On the last day of the shoot my dear friend Cindie (who is also an amazing food stylist) brought candy to the shoot.
It turns out the other half reacted the same way I did. Cindie’s Blood Orange Caramels with Toasted Almonds and Sea Salt Could you use regular oranges? Line the bottom of an 8-inch square baking dish with parchment paper. HOW TO: Get Your Social Media Story Featured on Mashable. Last year, we shared 12 tips for getting featured on Mashable, as well as 12 things not to do when seeking coverage. While most of these tips still hold true (and we still don’t have time for lunch meetings), a lot has changed in the last year, including the type of stories we typically cover on our site. The bottom line remains the same: we want to hear from you and value our relationships with the social media community.
There are, however, best practices for sharing your news with us that will both help you in terms of getting coverage, and help us in terms of telling your story. So, consider the following tips an addendum to our prior advice for getting our attention. What we cover: Mashable is “the social media guide.” However, we still cover innovative startups that are doing unique things in the social media space outside of these core companies. How to submit your story: The best way to submit your story remains by sending an email to news@mashable.com. 1. Insider tips: 1. Cell Size and Scale. Some cells are visible to the unaided eye The smallest objects that the unaided human eye can see are about 0.1 mm long.
That means that under the right conditions, you might be able to see an ameoba proteus, a human egg, and a paramecium without using magnification. A magnifying glass can help you to see them more clearly, but they will still look tiny. Smaller cells are easily visible under a light microscope. It's even possible to make out structures within the cell, such as the nucleus, mitochondria and chloroplasts. To see anything smaller than 500 nm, you will need an electron microscope. Adenine The label on the nucleotide is not quite accurate.
How can an X chromosome be nearly as big as the head of the sperm cell? No, this isn't a mistake. The X chromosome is shown here in a condensed state, as it would appear in a cell that's going through mitosis. A chromosome is made up of genetic material (one long piece of DNA) wrapped around structural support proteins (histones). Carbon. A Recipe to Replace Corn Syrup: How To Make Cane Syrup | Apartment Therapy The Kitchn. We’ve been searching high and low for something to replace the corn syrup called for in some of our favorite baking recipes. Something less processed, without high fructose corn syrup, and ideally, easy to make at home. We've finally found it. We originally came across this recipe in the book Marshmallows by Eileen Talanian (a book we also used when developing our Vanilla Marshmallow recipe). Talanian's instructions are to boil sugar and water to a specific temperature, at which point it becomes what’s called an invert sugar.
Invert sugars are what help keep the melted sugar in candy and baking recipes from re-crystallizing. Corn syrup is the most widely available commercially-made invert sugar, and this is why most recipes call for it. Talanian calls her homemade invert sugar “Marshmallow Syrup” and says she prefers it to corn syrup for the cleaner flavor and fluffier texture it gives marshmallows. One Last Note - Re-heating can sometimes cause the syrup to begin crystallizing. Erik A. Dewey. The Big Book is back! I've gone through the original Big Book and made a few changes. The biggest ones are adjusting the Excel version so you can enter your information in without typing over anything. I've also added 5 new pages covering things like current resumes, schooling history, transcripts, and other contacts after a death.
Hopefully the Big Book of Everything is even more complete now. I've also talked with Mark Gavagan, the writer of the It's All Right Here and 12 Critical Things Your Family Needs to Know. He was very enthusiastic about the Big Book Mark II. Be sure to look at what he has to offer. What is the Big Book of Everything? In a nutshell, it is a notebook filled with all of the information anyone could possibly need to know about you. Uses for the Big Book are: After you pass away. So, how long does this take to fill out? Well you certainly could sit down and bang it all out in one sitting but that would take a long time, longer than it takes to do your taxes. Enjoy. 3quarksdaily. Fruit Rolls. © 2010 Green Kitchen Stories One of the things that we have been talking about trying since we started this blog is Fruit Rolls. You know those sticky candy rolls that you buy just when you thought you were done shopping in the supermarket. They usually contain gelatin, preservatives and a whole lot of sugar.
After a quick recipe search on the internet it seems like that doesn’t have to be the case. Just using fruit is actually enough to make candy in all kind of shapes and colors. Fruit Rolls When making fruit rolls you can basically use whatever fruit you have at home. Warm the fruit in a pot on the stove and mix it into a puree. Fruit suggestions: Here are some fruit mixes that we will try the next time.Green: Kiwi, mango and mint leavesBlue: Blueberries and grape juiceRed: Strawberries and banana Sprinkle coconut flakes and serve them as Fruit flats.
Spiced Strawberry Soup with Mint Cream and Choco-Nut Crisps. (Mentioned in Fine Cooking’s Soup Week.) Happy Mother’s Day to all the beautiful MOMS out there!! Indulge, Pamper yourselves & Have a Blast! While I impatiently sat at the dentist’s office, leafing through the stack of magazines, I came across a name of a recipe, which became the inspiration of this Berry Soup. It was some Chilled Soup with Mint Vanilla Crisps. I do not recollect reading the recipe. Most of berry soups I looked elsewhere, had cream or yogurt swirled into it, & somehow all those reminded me of a smoothie. Joys of Spring are the Berries & the Cream! I do not know how the recipe in the magazine went about, but the idea was all I needed. I suppose this soup can be done with any berries. I broke them into pieces.. unevenly. This could be dessert or may be served as a soup as the first course of a summer dinner. The Soup, the Yogurt Cream & the Crisps can all be prepared ahead, & assembled when ready to serve.

Here, she walks you through her PhD-level class on technology and media. Along the way, she distills a quarter century of academic work that goes far beyond pop culture's standard takes on how our world changes. It's tempting to see new technologies, especially new media technologies, as drivers of political and social change. But technological artifacts also embody the values and assumptions -- and conflicts -- of the societies that produce them, in complicated and surprising ways. "Technology is society made durable. For reasons inexplicable, a “Today I Learned” thread on Reddit has turned into a treatise on how to make Google Translate beatbox for you, among other things. It must have taken some intense experimentation for Redditor Harrichr to get here but he somehow stumbled upon the following combination of steps. 1) Go to Google Translate 2) Set the translator to translate German to German 3) Copy + paste the following into the translate box: pv zk pv pv zk pv zk kz zk pv pv pv zk pv zk zk pzk pzk pvzkpkzvpvzk kkkkkk bsch 4) Click “listen” 5) Be amazed :) Since the original post both the thread and meme have expanded into slight tweaks and variations, including Technocopter, Helicopter and Dubstep.
