Astonishing Photographs Of Drugs Prove Substances Look Just Like They Feel

You may or may not be familiar with the sensory experience of the various legal and illegal substances, but we're pretty sure you've never sat down with a microscope and pored over the celestial images that are hiding inside within. Speed Enter German artist Sarah Schönfeld, who's performed a similar experiment in her project "All You Can Feel. " Whether depicting methamphetamine, heroin or ecstasy, her images present an astonishing side of pseudo-alchemy, the result of sprinkling psychotropics and neurotransmitters onto photographic negatives and subjecting the swatches to the typical photographic process.

What remains are tumbling landscapes, planetary scenes and crystallized universes, dancing about in a manner eerily similar to the feelings you might associate with each respective substance. Even though the new exhibition that opens at the Museum of Modern Art on October 12th contains much of the same art, it still feels exciting and new. One piece that wasn’t on display in London is The Swimming Pool (1952) which is owned by MoMA and just underwent an extensive restoration process. It hasn’t been seen publicly in over 20 years. These creepy masterpieces of sculpture and landscaping can be found in playgrounds not only in Russia (even though this is where the majority of photos come from) but also in China, East European Countries, and even in the US – anywhere the grass-roots creativity goes bad and the bad taste gets promoted, often unintentionally. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for dreaming up bizarre stuffs for kids, and some of the sculptures shown here might be considered as downright fascinating; but others are… well, ugly as hell. And… not just kids, but some more impressionable adults can be psychologically scarred from letting these monsters into their dreams and thinking too much about them. Continue to part 2. De 2010 à 2013, j’ai voyagé à travers l’Europe avec le but de rencontrer ces hommes et femmes qui ont fait le choix radical de vivre loin des villes, en rupture avec un mode de vie qu’ils considèrent bien souvent comme étant obsédé par le rendement et l’efficacité et qui aurait la consommation pour seul horizon. Dépourvu d’itinéraire précis, forcé par les rencontres et le hasard, ce voyage aura pris à mes yeux le sens d’une quête initiatique finalement similaire à celles de ces familles. Huit de ces expériences sont ici relatées, et suivent des destins bien particuliers.

Dans ce travail, c’est moins une profondeur politique et théorique que j’ai cherché à sonder qu’une pratique quotidienne et immédiate, d’où une certaine nécessité d’opérer un travail de détachement face à des images qui nous forcent pourtant à nous positionner.
