What Your 'About Us' Page Is Missing. Survey: Most companies still not capitalizing on social media. For traditional businesses, social media is like a virus: it’s furious, fast-growing, and impossible to ignore. According to a new survey released by the Stanford Rock Center for Corporate Governance, the Center for Leadership Development and Research at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and The Conference Board, less than a third of companies today use social media for business purposes. If you're like most businesses, your About Us page is at or near the top of the list.

That's great--unless you treat your About Us page as an afterthought. After your site gets potential customers interested in your products or services, they naturally head to your About Us page--often within three to four clicks--to make sure your company is the right choice to provide those products and services. That's why your About Us page is often your website's make or break page.

Of course writing about yourself and your business is awkward, so many About Us pages read something like this: "NextBigThing Technologies is a global solutions provider that redefines enterprise networking and connectivity by providing a unique blend of innovative world-class services and outstanding customer experiences. " Sounds impressive, especially if you like buzzwords. So take a different approach. Start with the customer's needs. Forget what you do.

A new restaurant in New York City has implemented what it's calling an Instagram menu, directing patrons to pictures of food posted on the popular photo-sharing site to help them decide what to order. When three-week old Latin-American restaurant Comodo — located in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood — noticed guests were repeatedly snapping pictures of their entrees and uploading them to Instagram, it decided to capitalize on the trend.

The restaurant has embraced the hashtag #ComodoMenu and added it to the bottom of its real-life menu, encouraging guests to add, share and check out photos of food offered at the establishment. "People love taking pictures of food when they go out, and we wanted to use what was organically happening on social media sites and turn it into a helpful and fun tool at the restaurant," Comodo owner Felipe Donnelly told Mashable. "We've been encouraging guests to post pictures on Instagram to spread the word, and the feedback has been great. How Small Businesses Can Use LinkedIn to Recruit. This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business. In one sense, LinkedIn has revolutionized job recruiting, but in another sense it hasn't. After all, the social network is just a giant database of potential employees. To actually recruit, you still have to email or even — gulp — pick up the phone.

If you're a small business, you have to do some number-crunching to determine how much to invest in LinkedIn. If you're looking to fill just one or two positions, then spending $7,000 or so for LinkedIn Recruiter might be a bit extravagant. However, you also have to calculate how much time it takes to recruit and screen applicants yourself and maybe consider the fact that without a professional recruiter on board, you may be making a costly mistake. Of course, small business owners are constantly grappling with such calculations. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Supporting Sponsor. 47 Digital Media Resources You May Have Missed.
