The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art / Morphosis Architects. 41 Cooper Square, the new academic building for The Cooper Union, aspires to manifest the character, culture and vibrancy of both the 150 year-old institution and of the city in which it was founded.

The institution remains committed to Peter Cooper’s radically optimistic intention to provide an education “as free as water and air” and has subsequently grown to become a renowned intellectual and cultural center for the City of New York. 41 Cooper Square aspires to reflect the institution’s stated goal to create an iconic building – one that reflects its values and aspirations as a center for advanced and innovative education in Art, Architecture and Engineering.

Internally, the building is conceived as a vehicle to foster collaboration and cross-disciplinary dialogue among the college’s three schools, previously housed in separate buildings. A vertical piazza—the central space for informal social, intellectual and creative exchange—forms the heart of the new academic building. 2012_ABC portfolio, Panagiotis PAPANASTASIS. 2013 / Discovery of slowness. Heliostat. Heliostat by the Viennese instrument maker Ekling (ca. 1850) A heliostat (from helios, the Greek word for sun, and stat, as in stationary) is a device that includes a mirror, usually a plane mirror, which turns so as to keep reflecting sunlight toward a predetermined target, compensating for the sun's apparent motions in the sky.

The target may be a physical object, distant from the heliostat, or a direction in space. To do this, the reflective surface of the mirror is kept perpendicular to the bisector of the angle between the directions of the sun and the target as seen from the mirror. In almost every case, the target is stationary relative to the heliostat, so the light is reflected in a fixed direction. According to contemporary sources the heliostata, as it was called at first, was invented by Willem 's Gravesande (1688-1742).[1] Other contenders are Giovanni Alonso Borelli (1608-1679) and Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit (1686-1736).[2] The 11MW PS10 near Seville in Spain.

Arctic Transition. Master Thesis _ Biocity Lindau _1. The CASE for Sustainable Building Materials. Earlier this year, the Center for Architecture, Science, and Ecology (CASE) received a 2011 R&D Award from the American Institute of Architects for one of their newest research projects – the Solar Enclosure for Water Reuse. Here are a few thoughts from the award announcement: According to the World Health Organization and UNICEF, approximately one in eight people lack access to safe drinking water. In the United States, the building industry alone consumes 12 percent of all water withdrawals, and another 49 percent of water is used to create energy to power the built environment, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. In the face of such overwhelming evidence, the Center for Architecture Science and Ecology—a partnership between Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute—developed a prototype that conserves energy and uses solar energy to passively filter graywater.

And the system isn’t stashed in the basement or hidden from view. Sounds about right. ShareThis. Bengbu City Opera House Final - compMatter-TA. A New Way of Visualizing Solar Radiation « Responsive Skins. Last fall a custom data visualization developed by our research team was featured on the information is beautiful website as part of their information is beautiful awards.

In this post we discuss why we developed the graphic and how it is used. Incident Solar Radiation is one of the most common types of analysis performed by architects at the conceptual design stage. Results indicate where solar heat gain might be an issue. These are areas where glazing should be minimized and exterior sunshades should be considered. Unfortunately, Ecotect does not have a way of communicating all of the results of this analysis in a single concise graphic format. As part of the research effort, we have developed a grasshopper definition that generates a graphic representation of both heat intensity and panel orientation in a single frame. Typically, results from solar radiation analysis in Autodesk Ecotect are displayed in 3d. The following analysis was performed for the CJ R&D Center. Like this: Parametric Solar Architecture. When I was a student, 3D modeling and rendering on computer was an advanced skill. I only managed to create my first rendering at 4th year project. Then, it became a special talent for designers, even opening a freelance business. However that came to an end when that technology has expanded, reaching to everybody. Ten years ago, different ecological analysis methods on geometric designs were also another specialized field that everybody doesn’t have access to. Now it seems those technological skills are becoming more and more user-friendly, and free.
