Tie on your bibs: T+L tracks down the juiciest claws, the tenderest tails, and the most overstuffed lobster rolls Maine has to offer. Five Islands Lobster Co., Georgetown Gawk at the Sunset: Five Islands has become a bit overrun these last few summers, but the crowds can’t detract from the setting: a windy promontory with 360-degree views of the five pine-shrouded islands. There’s no indoor seating (not that you’d want it), so bring a sweater, come at sunset, and watch the sailboats and gulls chase one another across the bay—one of the coldest and deepest in Maine, which locals say makes for the best lobsters.
Choose your dinner from the tank, add a cob of sweet corn, then head next door to the fry shack for an order of crisp onion rings. Step outside, crack open a knuckle (the tastiest part, bar none), set gaze on horizon, and swoon. Repeat until both sun and lobster vanish. On June 5, our editors undertook the arduous task of eating twenty-three different lobster rolls at the annual Tasting Table Lobster Rumble. After sampling rolls from every corner of the country, one emerged victorious as Editor's Choice: Robert's Maine Grill in Kittery, Maine, who piled their buttery hot dog rolls high with fresh tail, knuckle and claw meat from local lobsters.
Given our enthusiasm for the state's best-known edible mascot, we asked Robert's owner Michael Landgarten to take us on a culinary tour of his home state. But for Danielle and Justin Walker, the owners of the idyllic restaurant and farm, Earth at Hidden Pond, in Kennebunkport, it’s part of a rich family legacy.
“Our son, Jackson, is the sixth generation to live on the farm, which was built in 1750,” Danielle, who manages the front of house, says. “When my father was 13, he’d ride his bike down to the cove and go lobstering.” Her father, Ted Johnson, is now 70 and still goes out on his red lobster boat (which he built from scratch by hand and named Jessie Danielle, for his two daughters) a couple of days a week—and Justin, as the executive chef for the restaurant, uses everything he catches in the kitchen. “He could bring in 80 pounds or 280 pounds, but we’ll take it. Like anything else, lobster is just better when it’s fresh caught,” Justin says. “It’s brinier; it tastes like the sea.” “There’s nothing wrong with boiled lobster—Danielle’s dad makes the best,” Justin says.

We love it. And we want to hear from you: Which is the best American beer city? It's one of Burlington's first 65-degree spring days, and I'm sitting on the patio of the newly opened Foam Brewers, soaking in the sunshine after a leisurely bike ride along the waterfront. I still can't believe that I get to travel to a brewery this way: not just by bike but along the Burlington Bike Path, a scenic route that winds along Lake Champlain and provides stunning views of the expansive lake and the Adirondacks beyond.
But it's not the bike path I'm excited about today—or even the weather. That I've been so wooed by Burlington's beer scene is no small feat: My standards were high, and my attitude admittedly snobbish, when I arrived here last September. Yes, I know Vermont has a great reputation for beer. Turns out Vermont gets it right—very right. Those IPAs I'd come to love in San Diego? Five Islands Lobster Co. Woodstock, VT - 11.14 - Map & Menu. The first thing we heard from most of our friends and family after finding out about our upcoming wedding was either “where are you going to eat after the ceremony?”
Or “where are you going to honeymoon?”. I suppose that maintaining a travel and food site sets a certain expectation in this regard, so I think most people were surprised when we’d respond that we hadn’t really given the latter too much thought. Given some upcoming house projects, our work schedules, and the relatively short planning time, we knew we wanted to spend a few nights somewhere local shortly after the wedding, followed by a longer honeymoon at some point next year, but as to the actual location for our short getaway, the whole of New England was open to us. From the moment we drove into Woodstock, Vermont, we knew that we’d made the right choice. It’s easy to forget that the yearly trips Michael, Orvis, and I take to Vermont every August started as little more than a late summer work trip in 2012. At the time, we had lived in New England for four years and still hadn’t been to Vermont. Since that first wonderful trip to the Green Mountain State, we’ve been back a number of times, at various points throughout the year, and continue to fall even more in love with the state, but it sure is hard to beat our summer visits to Vermont.
This August’s destination was Woodstock, a town that will always hold a very special place in our hearts, as it is where we traveled right after we were married last fall. The Woodstock Inn, we’re thrilled to report, is still as dog-friendly and inviting as it was back in November, and the town is just as charming, if not more so, in the summer when yards and gardens are at their very best, and the streets and square are bustling with people.

Meredith and I often post about summer “blowing by” or life feeling too rushed and busy, so in an attempt to slow things down a bit, disconnect for just over a day, and take advantage of some of the precious remaining summer, we recently took a somewhat impromptu overnight trip to southern Vermont. The trip was just what we were looking for, and in under 30 hours, we had the chance to visit some picturesque New England towns, try some unbelievable meals, cheeses, and desserts, and relax by the pool on a Vermont hillside – not too shabby! My favorite Maine lobster shacks | Maine Travel Maven. When I eat lobster, I take no prisoners. All that’s identifiable in the carnage left behind are the eyes, antennae, swimmeretes (those feathery appendages on the underside of the body), and dismembered carcass. Finished, I’m literally dripping in lobster juice and goo. The only place for such a messy operation is a classic lobster shack, a sometimes rough-and-tumble operation that’s usually within sight and scent of the ocean.
I’ve dined at lobster outposts from Kittery to Eastport. Some serve only lobster, others a full menu ranging from hot dogs to blueberry pie. I favor the in-the-rough, order-at-the-counter, eat-out-on-a-picnic-table shacks. And remember that while lobster prices reflect market conditions, the farther you travel from the trappings of civilization and the deeper you get into bona fide lobstering territory, the fewer frills and the less costly the goods.
