NAIAS - Ford Digital Summit. January 13, 2013 I’m attending the North American International Auto Show as a guest of Ford Motor Company. Over the next few days I’ll be writing about the Digital Summit they are holding over the next two days as well as thoughts about how the company [and other auto makers] are using social communications channels to attract and retain loyal owners. Disclosure: I am a guest of Ford Motor Company, which has paid for my airfare, hotel and hospitality during my stay in Detroit for the NAIAS and digital summit. They have, however, not asked that I write about it, nor have they asked that I write favourably about them in return for their hospitality and have not asked for editorial pre-sight of what I write. ReTweets Are More Valuable Than Likes, Plusses Or Check-ins. You see it on every site, including this one. Share icons after every post. These icons are taking over the conventional comment sections.

I still think comments are the best form of feedback, but in this world of “instant gratification”, I prefer retweets on Twitter. On Twitter, if you read an article and retweet it to your community it shows the following: You took the time to acknowledge someone’s post or link andYou thought it was good information to share with others or you have opinion regarding the post.Sometimes the comments with the retweet can actually help sell your ideas to your community. It puts the focus on good content that is valuable to people. These type of communications on Twitter, travel far and fast and soon many posts have gone viral in a matter of hours. Compare this activity to other activities on social media platforms: Likes – For family purposes, it can be a contest to see how many likes a person can get and there are some good comments from time to time.

How American Express is Integrating Social Media into its Marketing DNA. I remember my father gently chiding my grandfather as to his conservative approach to life. My grandfather was brought up when the world changed ever so slowly and never lived to see the mobile phone or the internet. He was a man who was very slow to adapt to change, which was common for his generation. His conservative approach was evidenced by the “belt and braces” approach to life… If his belt broke his braces were always there to hold his pants up.

My father said this was the perfect example of a pessimist! Being slow to adapt to change is not necessarily a bad thing but if business conservatism is standing in the way of innovation and company growth then it is not a positive but often a hindrance. Large global brands in traditional conservative industries very often see social media as a threat because they hear and see PR horror stories. The Crowd Sourcing of Marketing This is because it provides “crowd sourcing” of story telling and marketing. Facebook Twitter LinkedIn YouTube Foursquare. But when you’re the size of InterContinental Hotels Group, with nine brands operating in 100 countries and serving more than 130 million guests annually, the volume of feedback and conversation can be overwhelming.

How do you sort through it all to get to the meaningful, actionable stuff? In his recent case study at the BlogWell San Francisco conference, IHG’s Nick Ayres walked the audience through how the company created an exclusive fan community that gives the brand amazing feedback and guidance for its social initiatives. Social media isn't innovative rather it is how, what and why people use it that creates innovation. Consider the rate of change and interest in conversations. People exchanging what they know with others and learning what others know.

On the fringes is people leveraging both to discover what nobody knows, innovation. Innovation is what fuels an economy. Without innovation things remain the same and with innovation things change, some dramatically. Who would of thought that connecting people and conversations would create influence over how markets operate? Who knows what other changes this new dynamic will create? How Would You Define Innovation? Dan Robles writes: Innovation is most often defined as a good idea that has a favorable economic outcome — in other words, you know it when you sell it. I have seen Corporate executives glow red in the face shouting down top talent barking out; “It's not innovation unless you can show me the money!” Photo Credit Related posts: Link to original post. Jeremy Bryant: #socialmedia Can You Defin... How One Small Biz Turned Their Company Retreat Into a Social Med. As a mostly virtual team with offices spread across three countries in two hemispheres, the entire WooThemes.com staff only gets together twice per year.

During their first biannual corporate retreat of 2010, the company, which specializes in premium WordPress themes, saw a unique opportunity to use social media to connect with their customers and “eat their own dogfood,” so to speak, by testing out their own products in a real-world, and very public environment. This year, the team met for a week-long, working ski trip in the Austrian Alps, which they decided to share with their customers and fans via social media. The Goal Part of the purpose of the WooThemes ski trip was, of course, for the normally distributed team to come together for some in-person brainstorming about the company and their products.

The Implementation The Results Takeaways More business resources from Mashable: The Social Media Bubble - Umair Haque. I’d like to advance a hypothesis: Despite all the excitement surrounding social media, the Internet isn’t connecting us as much as we think it is.

It’s largely home to weak, artificial connections, what I call thin relationships. During the subprime bubble, banks and brokers sold one another bad debt — debt that couldn’t be made good on. Today, “social” media is trading in low-quality connections — linkages that are unlikely to yield meaningful, lasting relationships. Call it relationship inflation. Nominally, you have a lot more relationships — but in reality, few, if any, are actually valuable. Thin relationships are the illusion of real relationships. Here’s what lends support to my hypothesis. Trust. Disempowerment. Hate. Exclusion. Value. What are the wages of relationship inflation? Let’s summarize. The social isn’t about beauty contests and popularity contests. Now, this is just a hypothesis. Social Engagement = Cultivating Customers Demands | Media'ZBiz! Businesses are increasingly adopting customer-focused processes to gain competitive advantage.

But for building a business around customers, companies need to understand them. They need to engage in regular dialogue and conversations. Research has shown strong evidence that Social Media Engagement correlates to Financial Performance (see report on world’s most valuable brands – Who’s most engaged?). This study emphasizes quality of customer engagement through social media by concluding: It pays to engage meaningfully in social media. Emphasize quality, not just quantity.Engagement is more than just setting up a blog or Facebook profile and letting viewers post comments, it’s keeping your content fresh and replying to comments; it’s building your friends network and updating your profile status.Engagement can’t be skin-deep, nor is it a campaign that can be turned on and off.

Businesses have to shift from marketing products to cultivating customers demands. dd cc he adds: ShareThis.
