Detroit Lives: Potential Beyond Ruin. Typical Detroit ruin fetish shot, from Vice Magazine The images and videos you see of Detroit recently have focused on two things, ruin and violence. Photojournalists go and take the same shots over and over of the same abandoned buildings, saying it represents the decay of the city, and especially of the recent problems in the automotive industry. Beyond being carefully selected, crafted, and cropped images that glorify destruction, often these images are intentionally misleading, buildings that have been vacant for unrelated reasons, or cropping out signs of life and activity. One of the few media outlets outside of the city of Detroit itself that has been trying to cover Detroit’s situation beyond images of broken glass is Vice, which had an article last year about the rampant photojournalists, and recently the Detroit Lives video, posted below.
