Says Consumers Will Spend $6.2 Billion in Mobile Application Stores in 2010

Analysts said mobile application stores will exceed 4.5 billion downloads in 2010, eight out of ten of which will be free to end users. Gartner forecasts worldwide downloads in mobile application stores to surpass 21.6 billion by 2013 (see Table 1). Free downloads will account for 82 per cent of all downloads in 2010, and will account for 87 per cent of downloads in 2013. “As smartphones grow in popularity and application stores become the focus for several players in the value chain, more consumers will experiment with application downloads,” said Stephanie Baghdassarian, research director at Gartner. “Games remain the No. 1 application, and mobile shopping, social networking, utilities and productivity tools continue to grow and attract increasing amounts of money.”

By the end of 2014, Gartner forecast over 185 billion applications will have been downloaded from mobile app stores, since the launch of the first one in July 2008. Worldwide mobile application store revenue is projected to surpass $15.1 billion in 2011, both from end users buying applications and applications themselves generating advertising revenue for their developers.
Tutto cominciò il 10 luglio 2008, quando Apple lanciò l’ App Store per l’iPhone. Da allora sono state scaricate oltre 10 miliardi di Apps sui terminali della mela. Attualmente sono disponibili oltre 300.000 applicazioni tra gratuite e a pagamento. Ormai tutti i principali player del mercato degli smartphone hanno lanciato la propria versione di App Store, da Google a Microsoft, passando per RIM, Nokia e Palm/HP. Anche gli operatori telefonici hanno lanciato i propri App Store, primo per importanza Vodafone 360 .
