I also wanted to be a teacher, deep sea diver, and a cashier at McDonald's, but that's a different story. In early elementary school years, I would furiously write about anything and everything that came to mind. My stories expressed the affairs most important to a seven year old girl—monsters, dolls, and the first day of school.
It would seem I had a bright future in writing, but all of this was cut short as soon as I entered fourth grade. For years, scarcely a sentence flowed from my pencil. Then Harry Potter entered my life. When I was fifteen years old, I became obsessed with the series. And the words began to flow from my pencil once more. Harry Potter inspired me to continue writing again. Slash Fiction is Like a Banquet is an essay written by Arduinna in early 1999 in response to a mailing list discussion about the rash of very similar, often very short, stories being posted at the time.[1] It was first published on the web as a guest rant on Sandy Herrold's website, Confessions of a Fannish Butterfly.[2] Shortly thereafter, it went up on Arduinna's website as well.
Some fans know it as "the hummus essay. " The central metaphor of the essay holds that the world of slash fandom is like a banquet to which we each bring a beloved dish...but once it becomes customary to bring lemon-garlic hummus from the store, everyone starts bringing the same thing, and as a result our feast is impoverished. First Wave Fandom: Fanfic what was in zines. Second Wave Fandom: Fandom what was on mailing lists. Third Wave Fandom: Fandom what is on livejournal. These waves aren’t by any means mutually exclusive—zines and mailing lists are still around, as are many fans who got their starts in zines or listservs—but the way fanfic is shared and disseminated and the way people enter fandom has changed with each “new wave.” Now, I’m about to go one about some fannish history that doesn’t always involve me, and start making sweeping generalisations, so be aware that I may be theorising with insufficient data.
