Renaissance comes from combining art and science for innovation

I wrote this in my last article and I thought some might ask “what the heck does he mean by that?” So I owe an explanation, perhaps partly to myself as well. I’ve often heard and read that innovation is either an ‘art’ or a ‘science’ but we do seem it always struggle to combine them. Why is that? I finished that particular article (bit.ly/NlrOpV ) with this: “The art of innovation needs to be broken out of the science that needs to be applied, and then knowing its entire component parts then recombined in sustaining, thoughtful ways.

Master Class: How to Develop Bits Like a Late Night Talk Show Writer

With the advent of cable and DVR, and then Twitter and podcasts, modern audiences have since been inundated with options for their late-night fix of funny. As a result, those who currently work within the talk-show format are forced to find innovative ways to stay fresh and entice viewers back night after night, all while maintaining a consistent voice. It’s a difficult balancing act, but one pulled off with aplomb by comedians like Andres du Bouchet, who is a writer for TBS’s Conan. Du Bouchet started writing and performing comedy in New York in 1997, specializing in absurdist bits that succeeded on the strength of their own internal logic.

Scientist of year looks at big picture by thinking small

Professor Michelle Simmons and her team are developing computers which will perform many calculations simultaneously. Photo: Anthony Johnson THE next big thing in computers will be very small. And Michelle Simmons is leading the way. The Sydney physicist is pioneering the development of quantum computers - super-fast, super-powerful devices that will use the weird quantum properties of atoms to carry out calculations billions of times faster than today's computers.

Her team at the University of NSW has already built the world's smallest transistor, by carefully placing seven atoms of phosphorus into a single crystal of silicon. Last night she was named NSW Scientist of the Year for her achievements, at a ceremony at Government House. Advertisement Professor Simmons, who has three children under eight, said quantum computing was not an easy science, and juggling a family and scientific career was also not easy, but she was passionate about doing both.
