By Tami Katzoff Browncoats (fans of Joss Whedon’s short-lived TV show “Firefly” and its feature film follow-up “Serenity”) have had reason to rejoice since Dark Horse Comics announced that the adventures of Captain Malcolm Reynolds and Co. will continue with a new six-issue comic series, “Serenity: Leaves on the Wind.”

What makes this even sweeter for fans is the choice of writer for the series: television scribe Zack Whedon... Also known as Joss’ little brother. Most of the previously published Firefly/Serenity comics, including those scripted by Zack, focused on backstory, or events that occurred between the TV show and the film. “Leaves on the Wind” will be the first series to pick up the action right where “Serenity” left off. “The birth is imminent in the first issue,” Zack Whedon told MTV News when we caught up with him by phone. 'Firefly' Returning? Dark Horse Teases New Comic Book Series

The beloved Joss Whedon series is seems to be returning to life via a new comic book series from Dark Horse Comics. Dark Horse, which has published "Firefly" books before, has begun teasing the return of Mal and the Serenity crew across social media. It all started with this image and message on Dark Horse's blog: Joss Whedon's beloved "Firefly" series and "Serenity" film's lifespan may have been short-lived, but managed to produce one of the most dedicated fanbases in the history of modern science fiction. Dark Horse is proud to be able to keep Mal and his crew flying with new comics and products. Since then, teaser posts have hit Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, showing the evolution of artwork featuring the ship Serenity. The "Firefly" TV series lasted for one season and starred Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Summer Glau, Alan Tudyk, Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher, Ron Glass and Jewel Staite.

Jewel Staite played the ship's mechanic Kaylee Frye in Joss Whedon's short-lived sci-fi western TV series "Firefly. " She reprised the role for the feature film "Serenity. " (20th Century Fox) If Nathan Fillion’s rough-and-tumble Capt. Malcolm Reynolds was the leader of Serenity in Joss Whedon’s short-lived television series “Firefly,” Jewel Staite’s mechanic Kaylee Frye was the ship’s (and the show’s) heart. Staite, Fillion and the rest of the Serenity crew are back on the air together for “Firefly: Browncoats Unite,” a Science Channel special commemorating the show’s 10th anniversary.

HC: Can you tell us a bit about your audition process? JS: I was living in Vancouver when “Firefly” was first being cast. HC: You talk a little about that in the Science documentary, specifically about the relationship Kaylee shares with Jayne.
