The NSA's Prism: why we should care. The revelations about Prism and other forms of NSA dragnet surveillance has got some people wondering what all the fuss is.
When William Hague tells us that the innocent have nothing to fear from involuntary disclosure, it raises questions about exactly what harms might come about from being spied upon. Here are some reasons you should care about privacy, disclosure and surveillance. We're bad at privacy because the consequences of privacy disclosures are separated by a lot of time and space from the disclosures themselves. It's like trying to get good at cricket by swinging the bat, closing your eyes before you see where the ball is headed, and then being told, months later, somewhere else, where the ball went. So of course we're bad at privacy: almost all our privacy disclosures do no harm, and some of them cause grotesque harm, but when this happens, it happens so far away from the disclosure that we can't learn from it. You should care about privacy because privacy isn't secrecy. ‘Monsanto Protection Act’: Obama Signs Order That Protects Maker of Genetically Modified Crops.
A biotech rider included in spending bill HR 933 and signed by President Obama on Tuesday will require the Agriculture Department to approve the growing, harvesting and selling of genetically modified crops, Fox News reports.
The Monsanto Protection Act has been met by White House protests and no less than two petitions, including one by the group Food Democracy that has garnered more than 250,000 signatures over concerns that back-room deal was struck with food growers at the expense of Americans’ health. Senator John Tester told Politico that the deal with Monsanto, the world’s largest producer of genetically modified seeds and crops, will only benefit big corporations.
“These provisions are giveaways, pure and simple, and will be a boon worth millions of dollars to a handful of the biggest corporations in this country,” he said. The National Farmers Union, the American Civil Liberties Union, Stonyfield Farms and Nature’s Path also claim to oppose the rider, FN reports. “Sen. Pepsi joined Monsanto to Defeat GMO Labeling - Boycott Pepsi! Stand up for Democracy and GMO labeling!
Take a moment to tell Pepsi Executives why you won't be buying Pepsi products ever again and ask Beyoncé to end her endorsement of this dishonest and deceptive brand! Dear Pepsi and Beyoncé Knowles, I believe that labeling of genetically engineered foods is a basic democratic right and that corporations that stand in American's way of knowing what's in our food and the food that I feed my family are violating this basic right. Last year Pepsi executives chose to donate $2,485,400 to defeat Prop 37 to label genetically engineered foods in California.
By climbing in bed with giant chemical and biotech companies like Monsanto, DuPont and Dow Chemical, Pepsi, unwittingly joined some of the most corrupt and toxic companies on the planet to keep their consumers in the dark about what's in our food. Today, I'm standing with citizens everywhere to join Food Democracy Now! ' President Obama signs cybersecurity order. President Obama on Tuesday signed a new cybersecurity executive order, allowing the government to share more information it has on so-called national "cyber threats" with private companies, namely infrastructure providers.
Obama introduced the order during the State of the Union address, saying "America must also face the rapidly growing threat from cyber-attacks," also calling upon Congress to pass legislation to "give our government a greater capacity to secure our networks and deter attacks. " As the President said: We know hackers steal people’s identities and infiltrate private e-mail. We know foreign countries and companies swipe our corporate secrets. Now our enemies are also seeking the ability to sabotage our power grid, our financial institutions, and our air traffic control systems. In press materials, the White House also noted that it had included "strong privacy and civil liberties protections. " CISPA didn't become law. You can read the full text of the order right here.
