Home. The Top 20 Eco-Fashion Sites. You read about, link to and send out tweets talking about a plethora of sites filled with either great content or stunning clothing, and it can be hard to keep track. I have my own problems keeping up, so maybe I’m doing this for my own good. Regardless, here’s a top 20 round-up of what I consider the best of the best (and most interesting) sites when it comes to shopping as well as learning about eco-designers, trends and news. (Is it shameless to put EcoSalon and my new eco-boutique Shift in here? Shh…) Blog Love Founded and carefully curated by Abigail Doan, Ecco Eco is undoubtedly one of my favorite blogs to peruse as of late for how refreshing as well as interesting the content is: Fiber meets fashion meets art meets couture meets environment?

Doan is also a writer for other fashion blogs, an editor and an environmental artist residing in NYC and Europe. Ecouterre’s mission? A Generous Peace is a new multimedia site that recently launched in partnership with People Tree. I spoke with the founder, Phil Reilly, about sustainable fashion and the future of the industry. The original post can be read here. 1. Shannon, thanks so much for allowing us to engage with you. Can you tell us what first started you on the journey of ethical and sustainable clothing? It was definitely a gradual process for me. When I started my first company, {r}evolution apparel, I learned even more about the negative effects that the traditional fashion industry has on the planet. 2.

In high school and college I was a bargain-bin shopaholic. Once my mind started to open up to the effects of my individual purchasing power, I had to teach myself a new way of feeling good — a way that didn’t require a new outfit or the latest trends in my closet. 3. The most sustainable and ethical clothing purchase you can make is buying second-hand. 4. It depends what you mean by ‘fashion industry.’ 5. Roll out the green carpet for Livia Firth, the queen of sustainable fashion. One of sustainable fashion's most prominent champions, Livia Firth - wife of Colin and eco-inspiration to Mery Streep - is determined to change the way we wear BY Tamsin Blanchard | 15 April 2014 Livia Firth The headquarters of Eco-Age, Livia Firth's consultancy business, are set back slightly from King Street in Chiswick, London, behind a whitewashed facade.

Inside there is a large open-plan space, with a giant bird's nest complete with painted eggs near the doorway. It is a prop left over from an event Firth organised last year to launch her first Green Carpet Challenge capsule collection - which involved five high-profile British designers and had the support of the British Fashion Council, Anna Wintour, and Natalie Massenet of Net-a-Porter. 'Managing ethics and aesthetics' is Eco-Age's motto. Livia Firth: "Once you've seen how a factory producing throwaway fashion operates, you can never really go back to the high street" The company's offices look like those of a busy start-up.

The options for unused materials in the garment supply chain. Alana James, researcher from Northumbria University and SOURCE Contributor, explores the options designers and brands have for leftover materials, scraps and end of roll fabrics - from recycling, downcycling and upcycling to rethinking manufacture.

Image: Hellen Van Rees in Fashion156 Every year in the UK alone, there is approximately 1.5 to 2 million tonnes of textile waste generated, with 1.2 million of this household waste going directly to landfill (I&G Cohen Ltd). Recycling and waste management is all too often considered at a post consumer point of the textile life span, however could interventions and considerations earlier in the supply chain be the answer in reducing these shocking waste statistics? In this article, we explore the options designers and brands have for leftover materials, scraps and end of roll fabrics.

New Global Classification System Provides Clear, Consistent Information on Hazardous Chemicals. The Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals is a new worldwide initiative for the standardized classification of hazardous chemicals and a communication system for conveying information regarding their proper use and handling. Many systems for the classification and labeling of chemical products currently exist between and within countries.

This is costly for companies working with different systems, difficult for governments to regulate and dangerous for workers handling the chemicals who may find a system unfamiliar or confusing. The goal of the GHS is to reduce costs, streamline regulatory procedures and increase safety through a universal set of rules for classifying hazards and use of the same format and content for labels and safety data sheets. The GHS classifies hazardous chemicals as either being a health, physical or environmental risk.

From these three groups, the GHS further specifies the types of hazards within each hazard group. A wardrobe from waste: tackling throw-away fashion | Guardian Sustainable Business | Guardian Professional. This year, I set myself the challenge of wearing 100% dumped, discarded or donated clothing for 365 days in a personal and professional effort to get under the skin of the problem of excessive clothing waste. Unexpectedly, the idea for this wardrobe anarchy kicked off during the filming of an Al Jazeera news piece, called Cleaning Up Fashion's Act. I'd spent a few fun days with a crew filming in a small number of good factories in China. The factories had integrated innovative and transparent textile recycling, mainly at their client's behest.

Factory-level recycling initiatives like these are to be applauded, encouraged and nurtured. As our filming came to an end, we found ourselves on one of Hong Kong's three depressingly packed landfills. I stood perched high on top of a man-made mountain of trash, a far cry from her salubrious and better-known mountain, the Peak. To start me off, I needed access to dumped clothes. Outsider Fashion. Nowadays in fashion, the words “eco-friendly,” “organic” and “sustainable” get bandied around a lot. Which is a good thing. Except that sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference between a brand that’s actually helping to make the planet a better place–and one that’s just riding the eco bandwagon with a less-than-well intentioned “organic” label. “Yes [companies are cashing in on consumers' growing environmental awareness by labeling their clothes "green," without actually changing their production process too much],” Timo Rissanen, Parsons‘ Assistant Professor of Fashion Design and Sustainability, told me. “The industry on the whole and marketing in particular have little integrity.”

“‘Green’, ‘eco’, ‘sustainable’ and the rest are nice but meaningless, feel-good marketing terms,” he added. Part of the reason why it’s so hard to put your finger on what a brand is actually doing to help the planet is because for many of the “eco” terms, there’s no one definition. Katharine Hamnett. Luckily, I had collected a fine amount of underwear before going completely ethical at the start of 2011, but soon the time will come when I have to face the challenge of buying ethical underwear and I have to say I am really worried. I am worried about the bras, how supportive they are, prettiness and sizing. I am worried that their wont be a lot of pretty lace knickers, in a variety of colours for me to be able to buy. I basically, have no clue if ethical will be able to satisfy my underwear needs, so a bit of research is in order. Fall is nearly upon us, and I for one am in the midst of building up my new fall wordrobe (as I'm sure many of you are as well)! But while sorting through the clothing rack, how often do you check the label for what its made of? I'm sure by now most of you have heard the term "eco friendly", or "environmentally friendly" fashion. What exactly is it? Quite simply, it's choosing natural fabrics over artificial, and opting for clothes that are good for the environment rather than ones that hurt it. Here are some eco-friendly brands and clothing items we're loving right now! People Tree: Founded in 2001, People Tree was one of the first clothing brands to advocate eco-friendly fashion. Style with Heart | Ethical fashion for the eco-conscious consumer. Technically Advanced Eco-Sensitive Apparel For Active Women - Fabric. Fabric Bamboo Bamboo fabric has been growing in popularity because it has many unique properties and is more sustainable than most non-renewable textile fibers. The fiber is made from the pulp of bamboo grass and can be woven into bamboo fabric. It is highly water absorbent, which translates into an excellent wicking ability that pulls moisture away from the skin when produced as a fabric.

Through the application of heat, bamboo is refined into charcoal and is then ground into a fine powder and spun into a fiber, until it is woven into a fabric. Bamboo has inherent antibacterial qualities. Ailin uses Bamboo charcoal as a woven fabric in some of its designs. Downcycled Polyester Ailin has varying degrees of control in the stages set forth by our suppliers when cultivating downcylced fabrics. PCD (post-consumer downcycled) filament yarn is used throughout our line as both a woven and a knit fabric.
