The death of degrees? 9 alternative credentialing approaches. Online courses stand poised to dish out a lot more knowledge in 2013, but figuring out how to measure that knowledge, let alone determine how to grant credit hours for MOOCs, remains a problem. With college education costs rising, and employers as interested as ever in evaluating what young hires know, alternative credentialing methods are popping up everywhere. As a result, numerous sites and services are giving users with prior learning experience—whether it comes from an incomplete degree, MOOCs or the military—a chance to present their skills to prospective employers. Education Dive is always on the lookout for new alternative credentialing providers, and these are nine of the most innovative examples we have seen: 1. MOZILLA OPEN BADGES Mozilla’s Open Badges project recognizes that learning today happens everywhere and seeks to implement a system that acknowledges this reality. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.
Oerresearchhub « A hub for research data and OER excellence in practice. Fellowships « oerresearchhub. The work of the OER Research Hub aims to strengthen and create networks between practitioners, educators and OER experts. Central to achieving this objective is the project’s international fellowship program, which will fund around fourteen fellows. This scheme will provide opportunities for fellows to collaborate directly with the project, network and participate in a series of online fellowship events. Eight “linked fellowship” opportunities correspond to each of the research collaborations that the project focuses on. The remaining fellowships will be recruited through an open application process. Four “open fellowships” aim to widen participation in the OER Research Hub project process. Each of these fellowships corresponds to one of the four educational sectors which contextualize the project’s collaborations.
An additional number of “visiting fellows,” who are not directly supported by the project, will also spend time collaborating with the team during the project’s duration. A new manual to support self-training and teaching of qualitative research methods has been launched by the Evidence for Action research consortium. The manual is aimed primarily at non- social scientists working in low- and middle-income settings. It provides an accessible, interesting, and clear guide to using qualitative research methods in applied health settings. The manual is organised around three main goals: To introduce qualitative thinking in research; To assist in planning, choosing, and using qualitative research methods in health-related studies and; To enable the management of qualitative data with a view to preliminary analysis.
The manual was developed by Karina Kielmann, Fabian Cataldo and Janet Seeley. All three authors have been working in health and development for many years, and draw extensively on their own experience of teaching and using qualitative research methods.
