Mecanum Wheels - AndyMark. Product Overview: Mecanum wheels allow a robot to achieve omni-directional movement while supporting large weights. AndyMark mecanum wheels feature our patented designs. The rollers of our mecanum wheels are supported on both sides and not cantilevered. Bengt Ilon invented this wheel concept while working for the Swedish company Mecanum AB in the early 1990's. A Mecanum-style drive base uses 4 wheels, including 2 "right" wheels and 2 "left" wheels. One right and left is on each side of the robot. Each wheel is driven independently, therefore a Mecanum-style drive base must have 4 independent motors (and gearboxes, if used).
