Valentine’s day is coming this weekend, and whether you love it or hate it, you must admit having something adorable to lounge around in makes any day that much sweeter. So I present to you the madeleine mini bloomers, a free sewing pattern that you can download! It takes only a yard of fabric (along with some elastic and ribbon), and an hour or two of sewing to whip up these pretties. These are no prim and proper Victorian bloomers, as you can see. They sit low on the waist, and are scandalously brief. The back view is particularly flattering. The waistband is sewn with two rows of elastic, and the legs are cinched with a length of ribbon. I actually took a picture of the giant pile of sweatpants that I usually sleep in, but it’s too embarrassing to share. Point is, I’m trying to cute up the whole sleep situation with some quick sewing projects. It also makes lounging around the house feel sort of special and less, I don’t know….gross.
I started with some sleep shorts in our beloved Nicey Jane (ooo, it’s on sale right now at Fabricworm). I also made a matching top which I will share with you once I get up the nerve to have my picture taken in it. Skirts+Cheat+Sheet.jpg. Tutorial: Shirred Pocket Skirt. Thanks so much for all the kind comments and compliments on my Anthropologie inspired shirred skirt with pockets. All your encouragement inspired me to go hog wild this week and make myself a bunch of skirts to last me through the summer. I got thinking of other options to switch it up. So I started out with the same solid basic skirt. Keeping the simple solid, but using contrasting thread. Using stripes and bias tape contrasting pocket edges. Big contrasting sections came next. This came as a mistake. At last I ventured into a printed fabric. The contrasting stripe is 1" bias tape. Dorky quick shots wearing the skirts. You can see these skirts (cut 25" long) hit me just below the knee. I used really affordable fabric, most came from the $1.50 table at Walmart actually.
So get your cheap fabric and decide what variation you like and make a skirt with pockets! -Fabric: 1.5 yards -elastic thread - elastic 3/8" or 1/2" wide, enough to fit comfortable around your hips Cut: -4 pocket pieces 1. 2. 3. I then remembered a linen skirt that I thrifted a few weeks ago on a whim (one dollar yall!) And realised that its construction made it perfect for my next before & after project. However, you obviously make them whatever length you want (and by the way, can you imagine buying a pattern for anything like this? Also - I don't know why I never though of this before! How to make my Chalk Lines Skirt. This is one of my favorite skirts (and my sister’s favorite to borrow). It’s not the quickest sewing project, since you have to sew each seam twice – once to put in the piping and again to actually make the seam – but it’s worth the extra effort. These are the pattern pieces: To add piping to a seam, first sew the piping to one side, placing it on the right side of the fabric with the decorative bit facing in.
Sew along the edge of the raised part – sewing on the raised part looks fine, and sewing too far back does not, so error on the side of keeping too close. First sew together the bottom and middle pieces of the side panel. To add the pockets, sew the piping to the top of the pocket, then add the top of the lining. fold the lining back and top stitch so this edge lies flat. To add an exposed zipper, finish the edges of the fabric so they won’t unravel by running a zigzag stitch along the edge. The piping stiffens the fabric so you need to add a facing to hem.
