Digital Tools Flickr: P i c t u r e Y o u t h By Sara Bernard Technically, Facebook doesn’t allow kids under the age of 13 to register for the site. That hasn’t stopped pre-teens from simply lying about their birthdates. But kids under 13 don’t have to be left out of the social media world. Of course, it’s still just as important to educate kids about Internet safety and appropriate online behavior as it is to create technological barriers between them and unsafe situations.

“As a teacher I see it as my responsibility to teach students how to engage with their peers online in a healthy and productive way,” writes teacher Catlin Tucker in response to an article about how social media is changing education. To that end, here are eight kid-friendly social media options: Dizeo: A fully-monitored site that calls itself “social networking training wheels,” complete with video and music sharing, homework help from subject-specialist tutors, and educational videos on Internet safety. +30 000 Free ESL worksheets made by teachers for teachers. La Mejor Manera para Crear y Compartir Comics en el Mundo. How to help children love writing in English. Roseli Serra, winner of the TeachingEnglish monthly blog award, writes about how to encourage children learning English to love writing in English too. One of the biggest challenges teachers have faced in the classroom has to do with writing. Usually students do not want to write, because they have never been encouraged to do it or to enjoy it.

It’s worth remembering that most people never write anything of any length in their daily lives, or anything using a pen and paper, or without using a spellchecker. But this is often what we ask our students to do in English. Writing, like all other aspects of language, is communicative. I have noticed that early on, children in language schools often enjoy the beginning stages of writing, when they are learning the letters or characters.

So what can we do to help children retain their early interest in writing, while they develop skills and confidence? Age plays a crucial role in what we teach and how we teach it. 1. Teaching Children About Digital Footprints. As we have introduced a 1:1 netbook program in grade four at my school, we are focussing on helping the students learn how to use their new devices to their full potential. We have been doing some work on internet safety, and this week have been looking at digital footprints. Not one of the 54 students in my double class knew what the term meant before we delved deeper.

Wikipedia describes a digital footprint as: “…a trail left by interactions in a digital environment; including the use of TV, mobile phone, the internet and other devices and sensors.” Unfortunately, I’ve come across a number of resources which only focus on the negatives of digital footprints and promote a culture of fear. The message I like to promote is that we should protect our digital footprints and try to ensure that they are positive. I’ve often wondered if having no digital footprint at all is almost as bad as having a negative one. Four years ago Chris said: Perhaps that day has come? Let's speak English.
