AA SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE - Lectures Online. Achim Menges Coalescences of Machine and Material Computation Series: Open Lecture Date: 1/11/2012 Time: 11:00:00 Venue: Lecture Hall Running time: 85 mins Both machinic processes, which operate in the binary realm of the digital, and material processes, which operate in the domain of the physical, can be considered computational.

Although the bias of contemporary design drifts towards the former, the field of architecture has sporadically instigated investigations of the latter. This lecture introduces Achim Menges’ work in the largely unexplored territory of machine and material computation and proves that both can co-exist and intensely engage the design process. Achim Menges is an architect and professor at Stuttgart University where he is the founding director of the Institute for Computational Design.

Aftermath: Population Zero « AA Inter 3. Aftermath: Population Zeroby mrt November 3, 2012, 2:31 pm Filed under: 2012-13 There has been a lot of talk in the unit about the relationship of human with nature , as well as the transformation of the natural landscape to a more industrial, mechanical, human-made one.

Aftermath: Population Zero is a quite an interesting documentary questioning ”What if the human population of the world suddenly disappeared?” , what would happen to the mega-cities and consequently to the animals, the trees, the air and so on. What are the ‘deadly forces’ we would live behind? Although it is an intense dystopian view of how we will keep affecting the planet (nuclear power plants and automated systems will bring a series of catastrophes), the whole speculation on it is really well filmed and interesting to look at. “Architecture’s quality might rightly be judged, not by the problems it solves, but by the problems it creates.” (Lebbeus Woods) Like this: Like Loading... Each architect was additionally asked to select a protégé who they had mentored at the Bartlett to exhibit alongside them. The pairings consisted of architects Marjan Colletti & Marcos Cruz with protégé Yusef Al-Mehdari; architect CJ Lim with protégé Pascal Bronner; architects Mark Smout & Laura Allen with protégé Johan Hybschmann. The discussion touches on digital design, pedagogy, “indulgent” formal objects and drawing. UNDER TOMORROWS SKY

Liam Young of Tomorrows Thoughts Today has assembled a think tank of mad scientists, literary astronauts, digital poets, speculative gamers, mavericks, visionaries and luminaries to collectively develop this imaginary place, the landscapes that surround it and the stories it contains. On Saturday June 16 and Sunday June 17 the think tank came together in physical space at MU but also in virtual space for a weekend of public presentations, discussions and workshops.

Come behind the scenes as we opened up the design process of the speculative city and exposed the deliberations of the Under Tomorrows Sky think tank. See the work in progress and join in as we debate the possibilities of emerging biologies and technologies. Under Tomorrows sky will open at MU in Eindhoven on August 10th 2012 and will be developed further for the 2013 Lisbon Architecture Triennale.

Architectural experiments at MIT

Were we quasi-scientists? Did we experiment? Maybe. We certainly built mountains of bizarre models and amassed stacks of sketches outlining our architectural conjecture. But I think what we didn’t do very vigorously was test the ideas we came up with in lab. The video, itself, is also great. Ioud. VisuelleGedanken.
