Translate each session. Human Translation Platform myGengo Raises $5.25 Million From Atomico, 500 Startups. Tokyo-based human translation service myGengo (“Mechanical Turk for translations”) has raised a Series A Round of funding.
The US$5.25 million round was led by Atomico, the London-based VC firm headed by Skype co-founder Niklas Zennström, and existing investor 500 Startups. Atomico partner Hiro Tamura will join myGengo’s board of directors. This capital injection follows the US$1.75 million in seed funding the company raised from a group of investors so far (myGengo’s other backers include Mitch Kapor, Team Europe Ventures, Point Nine, and more). myGengo says the fresh money will serve to bolster sales/marketing/engineering, to expand its API business, and to grow its global native translator network. It looks like the Series A Round doesn’t come out of nowhere: myGengo now handles a total of 15 languages (Arabic is the newest addition), up from nine languages a year ago. Tolingo secures Series A funding for fast, cheap translation service. [Germany] Tolingo, the online translation platform, has secured a Series A round of investment.
The investment comes from Neuhaus Partners in Hamburg which is using a local start-up fund run by a public programme in conjunction with the local KfW bank (hey, this is Europe remember). The investment will be used to expand further in Europe and internationally. Terms were undisclosed but sources say it is in the €1 million to €2 million range. Let’s say you’re a video publisher who wants all the world to have access to your content… But translating videos into multiple languages is time-consuming and expensive — that is, unless you’ve got a team of volunteers to do it for you.
One of the most efficient way to tackle the problem is by crowdsourcing subtitles, which is why translation startup Amara has raised $1 million from Mozilla and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Amara, previously known as Universal Subtitles, was created as an open-source platform to allow anyone to crowdsource transcriptions and translations of video content. Its technology has been used by volunteers to translate and create subtitles for more than 170,000 videos, including President Barack Obama’s message to Sudan and the KONY 2012 video, which was available in more than 35 languages in four days.

YouTube just announced that it is now making it easier for video creators to translate their video captions to more than 300 languages by integrating the YouTube Video Manager with the Google Translator Toolkit.
It’s important to note that these are not the automatic caption translations that YouTube currently makes available for about 50 languages.
