Building an Electric Upright Bass. Since I first displayed the EURB I began building in 1998 on my web page, I've gotten a number of inquiries for plans or instructions. Well, I didn't have any, and have none to offer, but I can pass on some details about the instrument I built, as well as share with you its faults so you don't repeat my mistakes.

Be advised, while I have worked on my electric and acoustic basses, this was my first instrument building experience. There are folks out there who actually know what they're doing. These photos may help inspire you to form plans for your own EUB. Since I play Double Bass, my goal was to create a compact electric version that would feel and sound similar to the real thing. My second purchase was wood from Exotic Woods; there are alternate sources, of course, but I chose them since they turned out to be only an hour from me, and provided very nice stock at reasonable prices. I did bury a 1/4 x 1/4 piece of graphite in the neck, epoxied into a deep channel. DESIGN FAULT?? Build Your Own Electric Guitar! Have you ever looked at a guitar and wondered, "How do they make that? " Or thought to yourself, "I bet that I could build my own guitar," but never actually tried it?

I have built several electric guitars over the years and through trial and error have learned many helpful tips that anyone who might want to tackle this sort of project needs to know before starting out. This kind of thing does require some wood working skill and also requires some specific tools as well but not all the fancy stuff that a guitar manufacture has.

Building an electric guitar is time consuming and requires the completion of several steps before your project gets finished but be patient and you'll be happy with the results. I tend to go into detail so as not skip any steps or tips you need along the way, and use pics from other projects that I did as well so you can get more that on reference. (Thankyou Mr Bek, VK3BEK) I noticed other older Kenwoods' very fine Ham Radio products now appearing on various Boat Anchor Radio manual sites.

It has performed flawlessly for me for nearly thirty years. Only the LCD display has now got "LCD cancer" and half of it is now a nice tastefull shade of black on black background. It only shows the frequency in use and now I sort of have to guess what its chanel setting is. The keyboard still works fine, so its still possible to punch in your desired chanel. It only puts out one watt, but that was prettty much the state of the art then. It was nicely made with a sturdy die cast chassis. The only operational issue with this unit is that noise gets into the VCO PLL circuit on transmit and imparts a bit of noise. The only modification that I may yet undertake is to replace the lcd lightbulb. The microphone insert in mine is showing signs of age, the audio is not very good now.
