Milano 2013 - FOODSCAPES at FOODMADE (Padiglione Italia) The project investigates the essence of food seen in a panoramic view from the industrial production to its individual consumption. By the analysis of the pre-cycle of food, and with that the origins of the food before it comes to our tables, it is underlined how, almost in an unconscious way, our food is inducted to grow and become eatable by some industrial logistics, which are far from our natural necessities. Conceptually, our food becomes a container to be filled with the projections of our shape and taste notions: a mix of biologically modified substances, extruded against its nature and with no possibility of failure. 100% peanut husk and potato starch 100% carrot peel and potato starch FOODSCAPE is a shell created withfood waste.

The Truncheons are a family of lamps consisting of a suspension, an articulated task lamp, and a freestanding Truncheon to be rested against a wall. Harnessing the tooled traces left by a CNC lathe, the Truncheon body is surfaced with a delicate, metered scallop. At close viewing, the rhythm of this cross-grain scalloping creates a soft interplay with the more linear wood grain of the maple and walnut.

Each lamp holds an LED bulb which is warm in color, yet cool to the touch. Viewed indirectly from the lamp's interior hardwood surfaces, the light emitted is rich in quality while maintaining the efficient characteristics that has driven the development of LED light. The Truncheon task lamp sits in a poured, weighted base of gypsum and marble. "Design Activist" Bridging African Traditions with Modern, Re-Invented Basket Lamps (Video) © Stephen Burks Basket weaving traditions in Africa may vary from region to region, but we know that oftentimes recycled materials are used in their making. Working with local basket weavers in a village near Dakar, Senegal, New York City-based designer Stephen Burks is fusing regional craft with modern design in these colorful, "re-invented" basket lamps.

Now being shown at Toronto's Design Exchange, Burks' Man Made Project consists of baskets which are woven using sweetgrass and recycled plastic into simple but bold patterns, and are then reconfigured into new uses -- sometimes functional, sometimes abstract. © Stephen Burks Burks, who has been called a "design activist" looking to bridge tradition with modern forms and functions, talks about the intentions of the project: These beautiful, coiled creations are not yet commercialized; so far, it's a design experiment, and Burks is now looking for partners to fund further production. Gray | designgoat. Gray is the first collection of furniture by Designgoat. The collection was launched at Vernacular at this year's TENT london.

The collection began when we were asked by Ann Mulrooney to contribute to an exhibition with ceramicist Derek Wilson. The brief was to respond to a single item from the book; The 100 Objects That Influenced Irish History. This book, put together by the Royal Irish Academy, is a comprehensive list of objects spanning thousands of years that have, in some way, shaped modern Ireland. Both ourselves and Derek were asked to study their chosen object and redesign it from a modern perspective. The exhibition showcased the studies, experiments and final result of the undertaking. We chose Eileen Gray's Non-Conformist Chair and studied the designer's background, approach, technique and style in order to inform the redesign of her chair. Loïc Bard: Lampe Capside. Lamina Lumo is an incredibly thin light emitting textile that potentially could be manufactured in rolls or sheets.

It uses advances in LEDs and leverages traditional materials to reinterpret the way we light our spaces. Lamina is an umbrella name for a family of products created from the lamination process of fusing LED strips and a textural diffusor. The diffusor is made from embossed paperesqe material. The textured membrane embeds functionality as well as a reference to old techniques of paper making, juxtaposed to high technology. In an age of excess, Lamina uses minimal materials but is designed to be memorably valuable by appealing to our sense of returning to simpler, honest objects. Advances in the technology of lighting has made LEDs affordable, bright and most of all versatile, the inspiration for Lamina was to reimagine how these innovations will change the way luminaries light our residential spaces.
