Park Güell (Catalan: Parc Güell [ˈparɡ ˈɡweʎ]) is a garden complex with architectural elements situated on the hill of El Carmel in the Gràcia district of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It was designed by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí and built in the years 1900 to 1914.

It has an extension of 17.18 ha (0.1718 km²), which makes it one of the largest architectural works in south Europe. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Works of Antoni Gaudí".[1] Origins as a housing development[edit] The park was originally part of a commercially unsuccessful housing site, the idea of Count Eusebi Güell, after whom the park was named. Municipal garden[edit] Gaudí's multicolored mosaic salamander, popularly known as "el drac" (the dragon), at the main entrance, as restored after the vandalism of February 2007 Gaudí's mosaic work on the main terrace It has since been converted into a municipal garden. Park Güell was commissioned by Eusebi Güell who wanted to create a stylish park for Barcelona aristocracy.

The park contains amazing stone structures (see below), stunning tiling and fascinating buildings. You can see from this picture the Gaudí dragon fountain that is at the entrance to Güell park. This dragon is adorned in beautiful coloured tiling and there is something rather hypnotic and magical about it. Here you can see a walkway supported by twisting rock pillars that seem to be growing out of the ground like tree trunks. Although these are rather irregular in shape they do feel strangely natural too. Gaudí was strongly influenced by natural shapes and used them in his work. At the top of Güell park is a terraced area where you get a wonderful view of the park and of Barcelona City. Park Güell also has a small house in the park which Gaudí lived in at one stage. If you're visiting the park by metro be prepared for at least a 20 minutes walk.

Photos of Park Güell. 1. Parc de la Ciutadella. The main attraction has, from its establishment hitherto been the zoo. This was due to out of the 7,000 animals present the albino gorilla Snowflake, who has died in 2004. Near the zoo's entrance, the famous climbable gigantic stone mammoth is to be seen, just as the metallic cat in another perimeter of the park. Another yet to be mentioned conspicuous characteristic is the park's paths' layout, one half being made up by sinuous and rather natural seeming trails, and the other by direct and refined ones. Along both, huge a variety of vegetation is assertively displayed, having small signposts at their front, serving as name tags.

Locations[edit] The Citadel[edit] Map of the military compound of Ciutadella In 1714, after a 13-month war (War of the Spanish Succession), Barcelona fell to the army of Philip V of Spain. A substantial part of the district it was constructed in (La Ribera) was destroyed to obtain the necessary space, leaving its inhabitants homeless. The Cascada[edit] Timetable: Parc de la Ciutadella, Barcelona. The Parc de la Ciutadella is Barcelona's most central park. The park includes a zoo, a lake, a large fountain and several museums. The Catalan Parliament is seated in a building at the center of the park. History The Citadel Main entrance In 1714, after a thirteen month long siege, Barcelona fell to the army of king Philips V during the war of the Spanish Succession. Ciutadella Demolishment Promenade The much-hated symbol of central government was demolished between 1869 and 1878 after the Catalan general Prim handed over the citadel over to the city. A New Park Castel dels Tres Dragons Already in 1872 work to convert the area into a central urban park had started, but it progressed slowly.

First of all it is a city park with green areas, flowerbeds, trees, refreshment stalls, statues, a lake, and a very impressive Baroque fountain. It was built for the Exposición Universal de Barcelona in 1888, and was designed by Josep Fontsère (and his assistant Antoni Gaudí).The area used to be a military citadel, but was turned into a city park in the second half of the 19th century. Around the park you'll still find a few buildings from the old citadel (and also some remains from the 1888 Exhibition)... Coordinates: Montjuïc (Catalan pronunciation: [muɲʒuˈik]; Spanish spelling Montjuich) is a hill in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.

Etymology[edit] Description[edit] Barcelona's Montjuïc is a broad shallow hill with a relatively flat top overlooking the harbour, to the southwest of the city centre. The eastern side of the hill is almost a sheer cliff, giving it a commanding view over the city's harbour immediately below. The top of the hill (a height of 184,8 m) was the site of several fortifications, the latest of which (the Castle of Montjuïc) remains today. Developments[edit] Panorama of the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition The view over Barcelona from outside the Palau Nacional on Montjuïc.

Naturally wooded, the slopes of the Montjuïc were traditionally used to grow food and graze animals by the people of the neighbouring Ciutat Vella. The roads in the slopes facing the city were once the Montjuïc circuit Formula One racing circuit, hosting the Spanish Grand Prix on four occasions.
