This is one of Grácia's most emblematic squares. During the day it is a popular spot for a stroll, reading or enjoying one of the open-air cafés. Usually there are a few street musicians performing songs and providing a lively atmosphere. At night the square becomes a somewhat noisier place (the neighbours have long protested that the square needs to become a calmer spot on weekend nights). A old canopy still covers a section of the square and, across from it, stands a statue entitled Astrolabi, a piece by Joaquim Camps, that represents a sun dial and the twelve signs of the zodiac.
Frommer's Review The center of the young Catalan scene, this bar is filled with bohemians, pro-independence Catalan youth, and people who just go to enjoy the tapas and the view over the plaza and its people from the outside tables. An eclectic blend of nightly sounds carries on well into the early hours, with resident DJs at weekends. Wintertime visitors can also enjoy piano evenings on Sundays.
The Parc de la Ciutadella ( Catalan pronunciation: [ˈparɡ də ɫə siwtəˈðeʎə] , "Ciutadella Park") is a park in Ciutat Vella , Barcelona , Spain . After its establishment during the mid 19 century, it was for decades the only green area in the city, and hitherto of the most popular. It is located at the northeastern edge of the old town, and hosts within its 70 acres (280,000 m 2 ) the city's substantial zoo (which was home to the famous albino gorilla Snowflake ), the Parliament of Catalonia , a lake, some museums, and a fountain of considerable size designed by Josep Fontserè (with perhaps some attributions of the young student Antoni Gaudí , who at this time worked at Fontserès office). It is characterized by being a very busy place, crowded with tourists, and locals, who are usually going for a walk or taking their children to the special section for kids found near the upper margin of the park.
The Parc de la Ciutadella is Barcelona's most central park. The park includes a zoo, a lake, a large fountain and several museums. The Catalan Parliament is seated at a building in the center of the park. In 1714, after a 13 month long siege, Barcelona fell to the army of Philips V during the war of the Spanish Succession. In order to keep firm control over Barcelona, King Philips V built the largest fortress in Europe, a star-shaped citadel or 'Ciutadella'.
