Facebook Twitter

Google Has Acquired YouTube. Moments ago the deal was confirmed. In their largest acquisition to date, Google has acquired YouTube for $1.65 billion in an all stock transaction. Both companies have approved the deal, which should officially close in the fourth quarter. YouTube’s 65 employees will remain with the company at YouTube’s San Bruno headquarters.

Details are also emerging that Yahoo was in the bidding war until very close to the end. Google is hosting a conference call and webcast to discuss the deal. My notes are below, and a recording of the call is here. This went from rumor to reality incredibly fast. My Notes from the call: Eric Schmidt, Google’s CEO, Chad Hurley, YouTube’s CEO, David Drummond, Google’s General Counsel and others are on the call. Eric is starting the call and immediately started talking about the content deals announced today. Chad is now talking about the reasons he agreed to be acquired by Google. Questions just started. Mary Meeker at Morgan Stanley is first. That’s it. Great Scott! Over 35 Hours of Video Uploaded Every Minute to YouTube. 6th Birthday : 48 hr / min & 3 Billion views. YouTube’s content explosion: 60 hours of video every minute — Online Video News.

It's YouTube's 7th birthday... and you’ve outdone yourselves, again. YouTube Charts. Eminem 1B views. YouTube now serves more than 4 billion daily video views. Gangnam Style Makes YouTube History: First Video to Hit 1 Billion Views. A million views? You know what's cool? A billion views. Today, a 34-year-old K-Pop artist made online video history when his viral video, Gangnam Style, smashed our records and became the first video ever to reach one billion views. Yup, that’s right one BILLION views! PSY's success is a great testament to the universal appeal of catchy music-- and er, great equine dance moves.

In the past, music distribution was mostly regional. One billion views is an incredible number, but the PSY-nomenon goes beyond that. PSY was already big in Korea, but in 2012, he became a global celeb as Gangnam Style quickly spread from Seoul and the pacific to North America, South America, and Europe. Congratulations to PSY, the flash mobbers, K-Pop fans and people who love fun across the globe. The kind of amazing creativity and unique connection between people all over the world that resulted in this one billion views is only possible with an incredible community of people we're so lucky to have on YouTube. YouTube Reaches 1 Billion Unique Monthly Users. Here’s to eight great years. When YouTube’s site first launched in May 2005, we never could have imagined the endless ways in which you would inspire, inform and entertain us every day. Today, more than 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute.

That’s more than four days of video uploaded each minute! Every month, more than 1 billion people come to YouTube to access news, answer questions and have a little fun. That’s almost one out of every two people on the Internet. Millions of partners are creating content for YouTube and more than 1,000 companies worldwide have mandated a one-hour mid-day break to watch nothing but funny YouTube videos. Well, we made that last stat up, but that would be cool (the other stats are true). Over the years, you’ve continued to surprise and delight us.

And so, this Monday, on our eighth birthday, we’d like to thank you for making YouTube the special place that it is. The YouTube Team, recently watched “Super Pastry Cake - Epic Meal Time.” YouTube reveals users now upload more than 100 hours of video per minute, as the site turns eight. These days there are few things bigger than Facebook on the Internet, but Google-owned YouTube is one of them, and today the world’s top online video service marked its eight year anniversary by revealing that it is now seeing more than 100 hours of video uploaded every minute. That’s right, every minute. That’s quite astonishing. It works out as more than four days of video uploaded each minute. YouTube, like Facebook, is used by more than 1 billion people per month, and it has gone from strength to strength in recent times. Back in 2011, YouTube users were adding 48 hours of video per minute, while that figure jumped to 72 hours per week last year.

YouTube paid tribute to its users and incredible milestones in a blog post (via @hunterwalk) that includes the following comment: Over the years, you’ve continued to surprise and delight us. This isn’t YouTube’s first foray into original content. Note: Thanks to those who picked up on the error in the initial headline. The History of YouTube by The Gregory Brothers (YouTube Comedy Week)
