Heads up, Skype. Shortly after releasing software for audio and video chat as an open-source project called WebRTC as open-source software, Google is beginning to build it into its Chrome browser. The real-time chat software originated from Google's 2010 acquisition of Global IP Solutions (GIPS) , a company specializing in Internet telephony and videoconferencing. The obvious beneficiary for the project is Gmail, whose audio and video communications ability today requires use of a proprietary plug-in. Gmail chat is getting more important as Google's VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) efforts mature and integrate with the Google Voice service. But Google has higher hopes that WebRTC will be used well beyond Gmail. If Google and allies succeed in establishing the technology and building support into multiple browsers, that would mean anybody building a Web site or Web application could draw upon the communications technology.

The WebRTC software soon will begin arriving in Chrome. Google Dissolves Search Group Internally, Now Called “Knowledge” Google has seven major product groups. Advertising, Commerce & Local, Mobile (Android), Social, Chrome, YouTube and Search. Search is, of course, Google’s first and most important product. But that group actually no longer exists internally. As of April, when Larry Page took over as CEO of the company, the search group was renamed the “knowledge group” internally. Google confirms the change. Why the change? Leadership of Google search, like most other Google products, was previously split between Marissa Mayer as product lead and Udi Manber as engineering lead.

Page, say our sources, has for a long while been thinking of search as much more than Google’s original mission to “organize the world‘s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” The problem is, “search” still means “search.” And there have been other experiments as well. These product efforts have generally been led by Manber in the past. Here’s how Google currently views the group. How Larry Page Thinks About Search.

Google Music. Google may have developed Android rival to BBM, iMessage. Google said to have worked on message rival Google has at least at one point been developing an equivalent to BlackBerry Messenger and Apple's iMessage, an insider mentioned Thursday. Details of the system were few, but it's implied it would be much more than just the existing Google Talk and other IM apps. The WSJ clue made no mention of whether it was still active or a dead project. Both the Apple and RIM messaging systems are both meant to be lures to keep users on the platform but are also end-runs around text messaging rates.

Google's motivations weren't explained, but it would likely want to have an additional incentive to lure away BlackBerry users. Carriers were reportedly caught unawares by iMessage and may be worried that, between this, BBM, and a possible Google solution, its once lucrative messaging business has been disappearance. Google didn't comment on the plans. By Electronista Staff.
