Blue Valentine rassemble Michelle Williams (découverte notamment en épouse flouée de Heath Ledger dans Brokeback Mountain) et Ryan Gosling (Half Nelson, Drive…), soit la fine fleur du cinéma indépendant américain et deux champions (blonds) d’un jeu minimal et nuancé. Dans ce mélodrame romantique que Derek Cianfrance a mis, paraît-il, pas moins de douze ans à essayer de financer (il parle de 57 versions du scénario), on découvre Dean et Cindy qui vivent modestement avec leur petite fille, Frankie, dans leur maison en Pennsylvanie.
