Blue Valentine. Blue Valentine - Trailer. Tristes tropismes.

«Ineffable». Rated NC-17. For all the hype about Natalie Portman's steamy lesbian sex scene with Mila Kunis in 'Black Swan,' the scene was still tame enough to earn an R rating from the Motion Picture Association of America's ratings board, which means it can (and will) be shown in theaters all over the country. Like Portman, Michelle Williams is on the receiving end of an oral sex scene in 'Blue Valentine' (opening Dec. 31). Despite the similarity of the scenes, however, the Williams scene earned her film an NC-17 rating, which would keep it out of most mainstream theaters, out of the movie-section ads in many newspapers and off the shelves of most mainstream DVD retailers. The directors of both films acknowledge a double standard at work here, according to the Los Angeles Times. [Warning: The following paragraph contains spoilers about 'Black Swan' and 'Blue Valentine.'] Both scenes are about the characters letting go of their inhibitions. 'Black Swan' director Darren Aronofsky seems to agree.

2 films, 2 sex scenes, 2 different ratings. One new movie generating Oscar buzz shows a woman engaged in a steamy sex act with another woman in a scene that lasts just over a minute without any nudity. Another new movie also piquing the attention of Academy Awards voters shows a man performing an identical act on a woman in a scene that lasts just over a minute without any nudity. Filmgoers who watch both movies, especially those oral sex scenes, would be hard-pressed to describe how one is more explicit than the other. Yet the first movie, "Black Swan," a supernatural drama from Fox Searchlight that opened this weekend, was given an R rating by the Motion Picture Assn. of America, which means it can play in nearly all theaters across the country.

The second film, "Blue Valentine," which opens Dec. 31, was given a dreaded NC-17 because of what the Weinstein Co. studio says is that scene. An NC-17 rating means anyone younger than 17 cannot see the movie in theaters — even if they are accompanied by an adult. MPAA overturns NC-17. 'Blue Valentine' has been downgraded -- or upgraded depending on how you look at it -- from an NC-17 rating to R. According to Deadline, producer Harvey Weinstein personally argued in front of the ratings board today to achieve the more theater and Oscar-friendly rating.

The film, about a couple who fall in love who then have their relationship slowly disintegrate, features a scene between stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, where Gosling's character performs oral sex on Williams, which was believed to be the reason the movie earned the original NC-17. Many were quick to point out the hypocrisy of the rating because 'Black Swan,' which has a similar scene between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, only received an R. 'Blue Valentine' director Derek Cianfrance criticized the MPAA for its first ruling.

"The essence of our film is that it's intimate and emotional and the sex doesn't feel fake. MPAA Confirms. You And Me - Official Music Video - Blue Valentine Soundtrack - Penny and the Quarters‬‏ Ryan Gosling - You Always Hurt The One You Love.
